Their journey initiates with summer and academic year programs that encompass hands-on learning, as well as exposure to high school, college, and career opportunities.

Elementary School Guidance Counselor Overview:

The Elementary School Guidance Counselor plays a crucial role within The Academy team. This position provides personalized, small, and large group assistance to Academy students as they transition from fourth grade through their collegiate journey.

The counselor collaborates with students, families, educational partners, the Academy team, and others to guarantee that each student receives outstanding social, emotional, and academic support, fostering the belief and agency necessary to thrive in education, careers, and life.

Each counselor is assigned a specific group of students and is accountable for implementing the Academy's advisory framework and pedagogical approach, working closely with the Lead Advisor to ensure every Academy student obtains the essential support for success. The counselor reports directly to the Lead Advisor.

To excel in this role, one must possess a profound understanding of advisory systems and student development; demonstrate leadership qualities and the ability to leverage the strengths of diverse colleagues; maintain an awareness of social justice and systemic disparities; be open to adapting programs based on evidence, innovative ideas, and individual student requirements; incorporate empathy and trauma-informed strategies within programs and structures; and consistently embody authenticity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish and refine the advising program based on academic performance, attendance, and socio-emotional metrics.
  • Deliver direct student services through instruction, assessment, and guidance.
  • Implement highly tailored advising support for a cohort of elementary students in fourth and fifth grades, focusing on key objectives and adjustments based on evidence of effectiveness and individual student needs.
  • Provide indirect student services through consultation, collaboration, and referrals.
  • Foster a culture of intensive individualized support, prompt responses to emerging issues, and comprehensive tracking of student growth and development.
  • Encourage asset-based thinking among students, staff, and families.
  • Support a culture of academic and personal excellence by collaborating with colleagues to cultivate a culture rooted in perseverance.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Empower Academy students to build agency and confidence.
  • Facilitate communication with students, families, and the Academy team regarding student progress.
  • Coordinate student advising sessions.
  • Gather and document students' academic performance data.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree; a Master's in school counseling or a related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in advising or school counseling.
  • Proven success in serving African American and Latino student populations.
