We are seeking a Lead Underwriting Executive to become a vital part of our Specialty Surety division. This role is responsible for overseeing the comprehensive development, expansion, and profitability of a designated portfolio within a specific area. The individual will be accountable for effective underwriting practices, pricing strategies, and the retention of profitable accounts by managing all aspects of profit, loss, and expenses within the assigned region. The Lead Underwriting Executive will formulate and implement strategic underwriting initiatives that drive growth and enhance profitability. Compliance with underwriting standards, regulatory requirements, and jurisdictional guidelines is essential. This position also involves managing a team of underwriting professionals and serving as the primary resource for underwriting referrals in the region.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the financial outcomes of Specialty insurance offerings in the designated area, focusing on metrics such as accident year loss ratios, premium objectives (including new business, retention, and rate/exposure adjustments), and commission goals.
- Ensure high underwriting quality and effective portfolio management by executing strategic underwriting initiatives and conducting thorough audits of new and renewal business, assessing eligibility, class fit, pricing accuracy, and loss analysis.
- Act as the principal underwriting referral expert for the assigned discipline, evaluating exposures by reviewing underwriter documentation and making informed decisions to accept, decline, or modify risks within established authority levels.
- Guarantee adherence to underwriting standards and regulatory compliance, monitoring regional performance and implementing necessary corrective actions.
- Provide strategic insights and tactical guidance to team members regarding product offerings and business lines, contributing to the development of underwriting guidelines and coverage forms.
- Engage in producer presentations and agency planning, ensuring service standards are met and maintained.
- Facilitate the professional development of underwriting staff, including goal setting, skill assessments, and performance evaluations, while overseeing training and development initiatives.
- May have responsibilities for driving new business production within the assigned territory, including identifying opportunities and nurturing high-level agency relationships.
- Extensive knowledge of technical underwriting, pricing strategies, and coverage nuances.
- Demonstrated analytical, decision-making, problem-solving, communication, organizational, and teamwork capabilities.
- Exceptional leadership skills, including informal mentoring and formal staff development.
- Strong understanding of legislative matters, industry trends, and market dynamics.
- High-level technical and managerial expertise is essential.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant software applications is required.
- A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is required.
- An MBA or CPCU designation is highly desirable.
- A minimum of 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in the insurance sector.
- 5-7 years of supervisory experience is preferred.
