Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Electro-Mechanical Engineering Support Specialist to join our team at the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State University. As a key member of our Deployables and Undersea Connectivity Department, you will play a critical role in supporting the development of innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform assembly operations and fabrication of facility and test equipment, ensuring high-quality results and adherence to detailed procedures.

  • Provide input to and perform design and layout of standard facility and test equipment, utilizing your expertise in electromechanical systems.

  • Inspect, test, and calibrate parts and equipment, identifying and resolving any issues that may arise.

  • Evaluate the selection of materials and components based on operational and performance specifications, ensuring optimal results.

  • Assess and identify system faults, and adjust and repair as directed, utilizing your problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Assist senior technical staff in gathering, compiling, and archiving test data in the laboratory or in the field, providing valuable insights and support.

  • May work as part of a test project support team, including selected task leadership roles, in the laboratory or in the field, demonstrating your ability to work collaboratively and effectively.

  • May develop and provide documentation for task procedures and process evaluation, showcasing your writing skills and attention to detail.

Additional Responsibilities for Higher-Level Positions
  • Demonstrate small team leadership, including setting priorities, organizing work, and training and mentoring junior personnel, showcasing your leadership skills and ability to develop others.

  • Demonstrate sponsor interaction, including briefing of concepts, testing methodologies, and/or results, effectively communicating complex information to stakeholders.

  • Develop new techniques or approaches to solve complex problems, utilizing your creativity and analytical skills to drive innovation.

Requirements
  • Highly capable in complex electromechanical component, sub-system, and system assembly, disassembly, inspection, testing, design, and troubleshooting.

  • Demonstrate the ability to interpret engineering drawings and adherence to detailed electromechanical assembly procedures.

  • Very high attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and quality in all aspects of your work.

  • Proficient writing skills to prepare test procedures and reports, effectively communicating complex information to stakeholders.

  • Microsoft Office, with the ability and willingness to perform basic computer tasks or learn computer programs.

  • Ability to attain and hold a Secret level DOD security clearance, ensuring compliance with security protocols.

Working Conditions

Your working location will be fully on-site in State College, PA. This position will require periodic travel to remote locations in support of testing as part of a small team of researchers, engineers, and technologists.
