Job Summary:
Hours: Full-time; 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

We are seeking a Patient Benefits Specialist (PBS) who will primarily assist patients with the Social Security application process. This role involves helping with initial applications, reconsiderations, appeals, and ensuring that patients complete the necessary paperwork for the Social Security Administration while providing appropriate follow-up. The PBS will also maintain a database to track applications submitted by the program and report on outcomes. Additionally, this position includes backup responsibilities for appointment scheduling and patient intake, as well as outreach efforts at various shelter sites.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist patients with their Social Security documentation, including initial applications, reconsiderations, and appeals; provide support for applications related to emergency assistance programs; maintain the internal Social Security database, tracking applications and reporting outcomes to the team; collaborate with the patient's care team to prepare Social Security applications and appeals effectively.
  • Conduct outreach at various shelter sites across Greater Boston, assisting patients with Social Security applications and necessary follow-up; provide backup support at shelter sites by welcoming patients and directing them according to their needs.
  • Collaborate with other SOAR-based programs in the Boston area and serve as a liaison to the SOAR Massachusetts lead; help organize and participate in quarterly Massachusetts SOAR meetings.
  • Engage in weekly case conferencing with the internal Social Security team, prepared to discuss outstanding cases.
  • Work with Disability Determination Services (DDS) and their homeless liaison to ensure timely decisions on patient applications; attend quarterly meetings with DDS and act as the lead for homeless services.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred: 2 years of benefits experience in a clinical setting.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Access & Excel).
  • Familiarity with EPIC (electronic medical record) is preferred.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Starting compensation is $23.00 per hour, with increases based on experience.
  • Full-time employees are eligible for a competitive time-off policy of 4 weeks' vacation, health, dental, and vision insurance, a 403B retirement savings plan with employer contributions, and a pre-tax MBTA pass program with a 40% discount. Additionally, eligible employees may receive yearly increases and an additional $7,500 added to the base hiring rate for demonstrated bilingual proficiency.
