Job Title: Histology Specialist II

Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is seeking a highly skilled Histology Specialist II to join our team of dedicated professionals. This is a full-time position that requires experience in IHC/SPU and a strong understanding of histology principles.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform routine lab functions to produce histologic preparations for examination by residents and staff pathologists.
  • Fix tissues in appropriate fixatives, dehydrate with graded alcohols, clear with xylene, and impregnate with paraffin wax using an automated tissue processor.
  • Embed specimens ensuring proper orientation, produce 4-micron sections using a microtome and appropriate knives, float sections on a water bath, collect sections on a glass slide, and dry in a slide dryer for a specified time.
  • Stain slides with routine and special stains according to approved procedures to enhance certain tissue elements required for diagnosis, coverlips and labels-stained slides, and examine slides with a microscope to ascertain that the results are satisfactory.
  • Ensure all blocks and slides are clerically correct, assemble and collate slides, distribute slides to residents and staff pathologists, and determine when prescribed techniques and apparatus should be modified in order to meet required quality standards.
  • Prepare specimens for a rapid frozen section diagnosis using liquid nitrogen and a cryostat microtome, stain frozen sections using various stains, and share responsibility for preparation of solutions and reagents in accordance with approved procedures.
Requirements:
  • 3 to 4 years of clinical experience, or five to six years of histology experience in a research setting.
  • High volume Clinical lab experience preferred.
  • Ability to identify different cell types and cell structures is a plus.
  • Minimum of a high school degree or graduate of NCCALS approved school of histotechnology.
