Job Summary:

The primary function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and maintaining workflow.

Responsibilities:

  1. Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
  2. Properly explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection methods to patients.
  3. Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  4. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.
  5. Check test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure accuracy.
  6. Package specimens for transport and store them according to required temperature.
  7. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  8. Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where employed (required in some states).
  • Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
