Job Summary

The Clinical Laboratory Assistant - Specimen Collector will be responsible for obtaining specimens from inpatients and outpatients, prioritizing collections to meet established turnaround times, and adhering to OSHA and ThedaCare department policies for specimen collection and handling.

Key Responsibilities
  • Specimen Collection and Handling: Obtain specimens from inpatients and outpatients, following proper identification protocols and techniques to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Patient Testing Support: Support patient testing by performing waived testing, loading analyzers, and performing lab functions as needed to meet patient demands.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Adhere to OSHA and ThedaCare department policies for specimen collection and handling to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Training and Development: Provide training for new lab and non-lab team members to retain top talent.
  • Computer Functions: Perform specimen-related computer functions with accuracy and speed, including entering physician's orders, processing cancelations, and entering add-on tests to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Order Entry and Review: Enter, activate, and/or review physician orders in the system with accuracy for patient safety and quality.
  • Supply Management: Maintain supplies and assist with inventory and ordering to ensure the availability of supplies to perform patient care responsibilities.
  • Special Collections: Perform special specimen collections (i.e., legal specimen collections) to support patient testing and follow up as required by law.
Qualifications
  • Education: High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • Age Requirement: Must be 18 years of age.
  • Certification: Completion of BLS Certification will be required for candidates working at ThedaCare Medical Center – Wild Rose.
Physical Demands
  • Mobility: Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance.
  • Exposure to Blood-Borne Pathogens: Job classification is exposed to blood-borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties.
Work Environment
  • Medical Setting: Works in a medical setting with high risk of exposure to blood and body fluids, chemicals, and biohazardous materials.
  • Sharp Objects and Instruments: Frequent exposure to sharp objects and instruments.
  • Chemicals and Biohazardous Materials: Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
  • Aggressive Patients: Occasional contact with aggressive and/or combative patients.
  • Computer Use: Use of computers throughout the work day.
  • Repetitive Motion: Frequent use of keyboard with repetitive motion of hands, wrists, and fingers.
