Overview:

The Custodian is responsible for the thorough cleaning and maintenance of university buildings and facilities, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and clean various floor surfaces and stairways through sweeping, mopping, stripping, sealing, refinishing, and polishing, utilizing both manual and mechanical cleaning equipment.
  • Ensure cleanliness of mirrors, blackboards, interior glass, windows, drinking fountains, ceilings, walls, doors, and other fixtures.
  • Vacuum and maintain carpeted areas, stairways, and upholstered furniture.
  • Conduct regular cleaning of lavatories and fixtures.
  • Manage waste disposal by emptying containers, ashtrays, and cigarette urns, and ensure refuse is collected from buildings.
  • Stock necessary supplies in lavatories and other relevant areas, maintaining an inventory in accordance with guidelines.
  • Replace light bulbs as needed.
  • Dust and polish furniture, fixtures, and equipment, ensuring a clean and presentable environment.
  • Remove snow and ice from entrances as required.
  • Arrange and move furniture and equipment to facilitate cleaning and setup for events.
  • Maintain cleanliness in work and storage areas, ensuring all supplies and equipment are organized.
  • Report any damages, malfunctions, or hazards to the supervisor promptly.
  • Lock and unlock rooms and buildings as necessary.
  • Perform additional departmental duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

A high school education or equivalent is required, along with the ability to read, write, and interpret instructions. The role demands physical stamina for medium to heavy work, including frequent walking, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with cleaning techniques and custodial equipment operation is advantageous.

Additional Information:

This position requires a flexible schedule, typically working Tuesday through Saturday during early morning hours.
