As a Family Support Advocate with Families On The Move of New York City, Inc. (FOTM), you will play a vital role in empowering families.
We are looking for dedicated and enthusiastic individuals who are eager to assist others in our Peer Advocacy initiative.
The Family Support Advocate at FOTM offers guidance, assistance, and representation to families with children or young adults who are dealing with or are at risk of mental health, behavioral health, or substance use issues.
We are currently seeking a full-time Family Support Advocate for our Bronx location. Ideal candidates should be parents, grandparents, or caregivers of children who have received services for behavioral and/or mental health challenges.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist caregivers by providing information, referrals, and connections to relevant agencies or service providers as necessary.
- Guide families through the complexities of the education, behavioral health, addiction, juvenile justice, and child welfare systems.
- Equip families with the skills and knowledge needed to advocate effectively for their children.
- Collaborate with parents, families, and caregivers to establish goals and care plans that support the mental health of both the child and the family.
- Meet with families in community settings to offer support.
- Document all activities in the AWARDS EHR database, including care plans, progress notes, and family assessments.
- Peer Engagement: The ability to connect and engage with parents, families, and caregivers of youth is crucial, comprising 90% of the Family Support Advocate's responsibilities. This includes collaboration with staff and partner agency personnel.
- Complete required training, including the Family Peer Advocate Credential, PEP training, FDC training (with successful exam completion), OMH New Employee training, Safety In the Community training, FOTM's Just the Basics Advocates' training, EHR AWARDS training, Mental Health First Aid, and Peer Recovery Coach training within one year of hire, if not previously completed.
- Demonstrate the ability to complete paperwork in a timely manner, be flexible, willing to travel, and work collaboratively with others.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required experience, skills, and attributes for this position include:
- Must be a parent or caregiver of a child, adolescent, or young adult with mental health, behavioral health, or substance use challenges.
- Ability to pass required clearances, including Staff Exclusion List (SEL), State Central Registry (SCR), and Justice Center Criminal Background Check (CBC).
- Broad knowledge and experience in the mental health system or a willingness to learn.
- Strong networking abilities.
- Demonstrated sensitivity and a supportive approach to the needs of others.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong relationship-building, interpersonal, and coaching skills.
- Capability to travel via public transportation between various sites.
- Sound independent decision-making skills.
- A team-oriented attitude and a positive demeanor.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Word, PowerPoint, One Drive, etc.) is advantageous.
- Flexibility in scheduling, including availability for evening hours and weekends.
- Authorized to work in the United States and possess a valid state or government photo ID.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
