Job Summary

Institute for Community Living is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Family Peer Advocate to join our team. As a Family Peer Advocate, you will play a vital role in supporting families caring for children with social, emotional, medical, developmental, substance use, and/or behavioral challenges.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a bridge between families and service providers, facilitating productive and respectful partnerships.
  • Connect families with appropriate services and supports, accompanying them when visiting programs.
  • Facilitate meetings between families and service providers, assisting with document preparation and addressing barriers to service participation.
  • Support families during transitions, promoting continuity of engagement and supports as needs and services change.
  • Coach and model shared decision-making, empowering families to self-advocate and promote shared decision-making.
  • Support families in discovering their strengths and concerns, assisting with goal-setting and short-term objectives.
  • Empower families to express their fears, expectations, and anxieties, promoting positive and effective communication.
  • Provide opportunities for families to connect with and support one another, encouraging leadership development and community engagement.
  • Work collaboratively with schools to promote family engagement and support.
Requirements
  • Ability to work with recipients/residents, families, and staff in a caring and respectful manner, with due understanding of and consideration for cultural differences.
  • Ability to serve as a role model to residents/recipients.
  • Ability to complete written forms and reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, recipients/residents, families, and the public.
  • Ability to prepare accurate and timely documentation, reports, and other written material as assigned.
  • Ability to secure the cooperation of and work effectively with others.
  • Ability to work independently, conforming to all applicable safety and accountability measures.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual in Spanish required.
  • New York State Credentialed Family Peer Advocate (FPA) or Certified Recovery Peer Advocate with a Family Specialty (CRPA-F) preferred.
  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED) preferred or a State Education Commencement Credential.
