Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Assistant Public Defender I to join our Richmond office. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing exceptional legal representation to indigent clients in various stages of litigation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct client and witness interviews to gather information and build strong cases
  • Work with staff investigators to investigate cases and gather evidence
  • Filing pretrial motions and post-trial motions to advocate for clients' rights
  • Litigate motions and notice appealable issues to ensure justice is served
  • Try cases in General District, Juvenile and Domestic Relations, and Circuit Courts
Requirements
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and Virginia State Bar admission is required
  • Active interest in indigent defense, criminal justice reform, and social justice
  • Willingness to try cases and improve as a trial attorney
  • Ability to argue legal positions effectively and persuasively
  • Ability to learn and quickly internalize feedback
  • Ability to track and meet deadlines
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize assignments, and remain organized
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with disadvantaged communities
  • Bilingual candidates who are fluent in both Spanish and English
