Welding Process Engineer

This position is part of the Space Exploration Group (SEG) support to the NASA EM32 Welding & Manufacturing (W&M) team under the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract to the NASA MSFC Engineering Directorate.
Responsibilities:
The primary focus of this position is manufacturing large aluminum aerospace structures using both friction stir welding and fusion welding processes.
Education and experience relevant to this position will be evaluated from that perspective.
The position's primary responsibilities are to:
1. Develop welding techniques, procedures, and application of welding equipment to problems involving fabrication of metals, utilizing knowledge of production specifications, properties and characteristics of metals and metal alloys, and engineering principles.2. Conduct research and development investigations to develop and test new welding processes and procedures, improve existing or develop new welding equipment, develop new or modify current welding methods, techniques, and procedures, discover new patterns of welding phenomena, or to correlate and substantiate hypotheses.3. Prepare technical reports resulting from research and development.4. Establish welding procedures to guide production and welding personnel relating to specification restrictions, material processes, pre- and post-weld heating requirements which involve use of complex alloys, unusual fabrication methods and welding of critical joints.5. Evaluate new developments in welding field for possible application to current welding problems or production processes.6. Direct and coordinate technical personnel in performing inspections to ensure workers' compliance with established welding procedures, restrictions, and standards.7. Exchange ideas, information, or offer technical advice concerning welding matters.8. Perform experimental welding to evaluate new equipment, techniques, and materials.9. Serve as project lead engineer to manage specific assigned customer welding development and manufacturing development projects.
- Help other EM32 W&M Team customers understand and resolve problems related to their welding manufacturing processes.
The selected candidate will assist in engineering/science problem resolution and task completion through direction, mentoring and guidance. The selected candidate monitors work performed, ensuring work meets requirements and deadlines.
The selected candidate possesses the ability to solve problems, determine project objectives and requirements, organize projects, provide innovative approaches and develop standards and guides for diverse activities.
The selected candidate plans and develops engineering/science projects addressing unique or controversial problems that have an important effect on major organization programs.
This involves exploration of subject area, definition of scope and selection of problems for investigation and development of novel concepts and approaches.
