Role: Director of Risk & Control CMDB

This position reports directly to the IT Asset Management process owner and collaborates closely with hardware/software installers, IT support teams, and IT Security. The role works in tandem with Hardware and Software Asset Management Leads.

As the Director, you will be accountable for implementing top-tier, comprehensive Configuration Management practices. You will lead the Configuration Management functions to ensure strict adherence to controls and enhance existing capabilities to maintain an accurate and complete Configuration Management Database (CMDB). Your responsibilities will include data analysis, auditing, quality reviews, and driving automation to improve delivery efficiency and maximize the return on investment of the ServiceNow platform.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Execute the strategy to enhance IT Service Management through the advancement of Configuration Management processes and demonstrate progress against KPIs/OKRs.
  • Develop a profound understanding of the Northern Trust businesses and technologies serviced by the CMDB.
  • Act as a leader and advocate for minimizing negative impacts on customers.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with teams and leaders across various levels.
  • Lead initiatives to maintain and/or improve the control environment within our highly regulated sector.
  • Build highly effective teams dedicated to delivering outstanding IT Service Management.
  • Engage with partners to remain informed and enable effective management of issues.
  • Ensure the implementation of the Common Services Data Model/CMDB supports our DevOps transformation and migration to both public and private cloud environments.
  • Promote architectural best practices and provide process guidance to IT teams and ITSM colleagues on effective methods for process/tool integrations with ServiceNow/CMDB.
  • Automate processes wherever feasible to ensure speed, consistency, and repeatability.
  • Deliver solutions that safeguard the production environment (e.g., through integration with Change and Release Management).
  • Oversee the process for Configuration Item (CI) intake (discovery/federation/manual) and updates in the CMDB, including onboarding new CI classes and attributes.
  • Ensure that the CIs necessary for service delivery are accurate and that reliable information about the CI is accessible when needed.
  • Conduct configuration audits to verify that the physical/virtual IT inventory aligns with the asset and CMDB, initiating corrective actions as necessary.
  • Guide the operations teams responsible for:
    • Mapping infrastructure CIs to Applications (Application Services) and Business Services within the ITSM Toolset.
    • Identifying and resolving missing Configuration Item (CI) issues.
    • Managing data entry to populate non-discoverable software and hardware CI data in the ITSM CMDB.
  • Contribute to the development of processes and procedures to continuously enhance CMDB data integrity and compliance.
  • Develop and present insights and issues related to ITSM Configuration Management.
Key Experience:
  • A Bachelor's degree in information technology or a related field is required, along with 7+ years of direct experience in ITSM Configuration Management.
  • ITIL v4 Foundation certification is mandatory.
  • Experience with configuration management tools (e.g., ServiceNow, Flexera, SNOW, etc.) is essential, including:
    • Expert-level experience in ServiceNow Discovery and Service Mapping.
    • Expert-level experience in ServiceNow Automation.
    • Strong hands-on experience in optimizing discovery, tailoring patterns, and development.
  • Proficient in data analytics - expert in ServiceNow, with strong skills in Power BI and Excel for analyzing large data sets.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • 10 years of experience in IT Operations/Application Development, with a minimum of 5 years in a leadership capacity.
  • 7+ years of experience with ServiceNow.
  • Knowledge of Operating Systems - Linux/UNIX/Windows/VMware.
  • Familiarity with datacenter hardware - servers, network appliances, backup hardware, etc.
  • Strong understanding of ITIL/COBIT best practices and controls.
