Chicago, Illinois, United States Educational and Institutional Insurance Administrators (EIIA) Full time

Company Overview

Educational & Institutional Insurance Administrators, Inc. (EIIA) is a collaborative organization representing private, faith-based colleges, universities, and seminaries, dedicated to providing innovative insurance and risk management solutions. Established over fifty years ago, EIIA emerged to assist historically black colleges and universities associated with the United Methodist Church in obtaining necessary property and casualty coverage through collective purchasing. This initiative created sufficient premium volume for an insurance provider to offer tailored coverage options. EIIA was officially incorporated as a not-for-profit entity in 1976, focusing on the group procurement and administration of insurance programs tailored for higher education institutions.

The success of the group purchasing model for property and casualty insurance led to the expansion of services to include employee health and welfare benefits, long-term disability, life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment, and student health and accident coverage. Risk management services were introduced to support these institutions in effectively managing and mitigating risks.

Located in downtown Chicago, EIIA operates in a hybrid work environment. Our team of insurance and risk management professionals serves over one hundred and forty-five higher education institutions across thirty-nine states. Additionally, EIIA manages two Vermont-domiciled captive insurance companies and two grantor trusts.

Position Overview

Key Responsibilities:

The Director of Risk Management serves as the primary liaison for designated member institutions. This role necessitates the cultivation of strong working relationships with members at all organizational levels, a deep understanding of the products and services offered by EIIA, and the ability to function in a dual capacity as both a risk manager and customer service representative.

The Director will engage in a consultative approach to identify risks faced by higher education institutions, seek opportunities to enhance the member's risk management initiatives, develop effective risk management strategies, conduct on-site risk assessments and training, document service activities, and support EIIA's internal teams in resource development and program enhancement for all member institutions.

Core Responsibilities:

Risk Management:

  • Design and implement tailored services for each assigned member institution, aimed at loss prevention and fortifying their risk management framework based on current needs, emerging risks, EIIA standards, and available resources.
  • Provide a comprehensive array of loss control, insurance, and risk management services, including risk assessments, loss cause investigations, contract reviews, regulatory compliance, educational workshops, OSHA standards, and life safety regulations.
  • Conduct exposure analyses specific to higher education, perform data evaluations, and formulate appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with institutions to identify critical risk management issues, conduct evaluations, and devise strategies to address these challenges.
  • Advocate for members' risk management initiatives when interfacing with internal departments, vendors, and external service providers, presenting data that underscores the necessity for adopting risk management practices.
  • Facilitate various campus visits, including orientation, loss-focused, new member, and risk management assessments.
  • Review contracts and agreements from a risk management perspective, advising institutions on insurance requirements, indemnification, subrogation, hold harmless clauses, and loss prevention recommendations.
  • Oversee and coordinate externally sourced loss prevention and safety service activities to ensure timely and quality service delivery to EIIA members.
  • Contribute to the EIIA Risk Management Team's initiatives by developing resources for the EIIA website and member reference materials.
  • Monitor and disseminate best practices, standards, and trends in risk management, safety, and loss prevention relevant to the higher education sector.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated professionalism, accuracy, and a customer-centric approach.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills for effective interaction with members and EIIA teams, including the ability to articulate coverage and risk management best practices, develop manuals, policies, procedures, and reports.
  • Capability to create and deliver high-quality presentations to diverse audiences.
  • Accountability for results related to assigned institutions and projects.
  • Proactive, adaptable, and flexible to meet the dynamic demands of the Risk Management Team.
  • Analytical problem-solving skills to derive insights from information, evaluate alternatives, and select optimal solutions.
  • Attention to detail to ensure thoroughness and accuracy in all service activities and projects.
  • Interpersonal and team-building skills to foster open communication with members and colleagues.
  • Organizational and planning skills to effectively manage and prioritize tasks, projects, and resources.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This role does not entail direct supervisory responsibilities but involves leading and collaborating with the Risk Management team to implement the service model. Functional supervision may include the assignment and distribution of tasks, project coordination, and issue resolution.

Education and Experience:

A successful candidate will possess:

  • A foundational understanding of risk management and loss control principles.
  • Familiarity with a wide range of insurance policies, coverages, and operational practices.
  • A basic understanding of property, liability, and workers' compensation claims management processes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Dynamics 365.

Preferred Qualifications:

Professional designations such as Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) are highly regarded.

Travel Requirements:

This position necessitates travel as required, including weekends, to member institutions located throughout the United States, including rural areas. Travel is estimated to constitute approximately 30% of total time for attending meetings, industry conferences, governance meetings, training, and professional development workshops.

Work Environment:

The role operates within a hybrid model. The work environment characteristics described herein represent those an employee may encounter while fulfilling the essential functions of this position. Many job functions are conducted remotely, with work potentially executed from home offices, hotels, conference rooms, campus locations, or other remote settings as necessary.
