Chicago, Illinois, United States Educational and Institutional Insurance Administrators (EIIA) Full time

Company Overview

Educational & Institutional Insurance Administrators, Inc. (EIIA) operates as a member-focused consortium dedicated to providing innovative insurance and risk management solutions tailored for private, faith-based colleges, universities, and seminaries. Established over fifty years ago, EIIA was created to address the insurance needs of historically black colleges and universities affiliated with the United Methodist Church, which faced challenges in securing property and casualty coverage. By facilitating group purchasing, EIIA enabled these institutions to access necessary insurance services, ultimately leading to its formal incorporation as a not-for-profit entity in 1976.

Over the years, EIIA has expanded its offerings beyond property and casualty insurance to include employee health benefits, long-term disability, life insurance, and student health services. The organization has also integrated risk management services to assist member institutions in effectively managing and mitigating risks.

Located in downtown Chicago, EIIA operates in a hybrid work environment, serving over 145 higher education institutions across 39 states. Additionally, EIIA manages two Vermont-domiciled captive insurance companies and two grantor trusts.

Position Overview

The organization is currently seeking a Director for its Risk Management Team.

Key Responsibilities:

The Director of Risk Management will serve as the primary liaison for designated member institutions. This role requires the development of strong working relationships with members at all levels, a comprehensive understanding of EIIA's products and services, and the ability to operate in a dual capacity as both a risk manager and customer service representative.

The Director will:

  • Consult with higher education institutions to identify risks and opportunities for enhancing their risk management programs.
  • Develop and implement tailored risk management strategies based on the unique needs of each member institution.
  • Conduct on-site risk assessments and educational sessions, documenting service activities and supporting internal teams in resource development.

Core Duties:

  • Design and implement risk management services for assigned institutions, focusing on loss prevention and program enhancement.
  • Provide a comprehensive suite of risk management services, including situational analyses, loss cause investigations, and compliance reviews.
  • Perform risk assessments specific to higher education and develop effective risk mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with institutions to address significant risk management issues through evaluations and strategic planning.
  • Advocate for members' risk management initiatives when engaging with internal departments, vendors, and external service providers.
  • Conduct various campus visits for orientation, loss prevention, and risk management purposes.
  • Review contracts and agreements to provide risk management insights and recommendations.
  • Oversee externally sourced loss prevention services to ensure quality and timely delivery.
  • Contribute to the development of resources for EIIA's website and member materials.
  • Stay informed on risk management best practices and trends within the higher education sector.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A solid understanding of risk management principles and loss control practices.
  • Familiarity with various insurance policies and operational processes.
  • Basic knowledge of claims management for property, liability, and workers' compensation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Dynamics 365.

Preferred Qualifications:

Professional designations such as Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) are highly desirable.

Education and Experience:

A bachelor's degree or equivalent is required; an advanced degree is a plus. Candidates should have a minimum of five years of experience in risk management, safety, or a related insurance field, with advisory or consultative experience preferred.

Travel Requirements:

This position may require travel, including weekends, to meet with member institutions across the United States.

Work Environment:

The role operates in a hybrid model, with responsibilities performed in various settings, including remote locations and occasional onsite meetings.

Additional Information:

This job description outlines the general responsibilities and requirements for the position. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of duties. EIIA is committed to fostering a diverse workplace and is an equal opportunity employer.
