The position is integral to the hemodialysis healthcare team, delivering safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, in alignment with established policies and procedures.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

CUSTOMER SERVICE:

  • Uphold the organizational culture through values and customer service excellence.
  • Ensure exceptional service to all customers, both internal and external.
  • Foster effective relationships through timely and clear communication.
  • Proactively address and resolve customer service inquiries and follow up as necessary.

PATIENT CARE:

  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to provide tailored education on treatment adequacy and disease processes.
  • Greet assigned patients and assess their well-being since their last treatment, reporting any concerns to the supervising nurse.
  • Assess vascular access for functionality and communicate any irregularities to the nurse supervisor.
  • Record essential pre and post-treatment vital signs and weight, alerting the nurse to any anomalies.
  • Conduct vascular access evaluations and report any complications to the supervising nurse.
  • Perform cannulation of vascular access and notify the nurse of any challenges encountered.
  • Administer Heparin as permitted by state regulations or delegation.
  • Initiate dialysis treatments according to prescribed protocols, including blood and dialysate flow rates.
  • Monitor and address intradialytic issues as directed by physician orders.
  • Observe patients' responses to dialysis and report any unusual findings to the nurse supervisor.
  • Document all relevant functions necessary for treatment discontinuation.
  • Evaluate patients prior to the termination of venous access and ensure appropriate dressing is applied.
  • Conduct thorough evaluations before patient discharge and report any concerns to the nurse supervisor.
  • Accurately record pre and post-dialysis evaluations, including weight and vital signs.
  • Responsible for programming dialysis machines according to individual patient needs.
  • Ensure safety alarms are activated and functioning correctly.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of treatment parameters and patient responses.
  • Report significant changes in patient conditions directly to the supervising nurse.
  • Conduct machine safety checks and document any irregularities.
  • Perform and document interventions for any unusual patient statuses.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens as required.

MAINTENANCE AND TECHNICAL:

  • Uphold cleanliness and safety standards in the work environment.
  • Clean and disinfect equipment and treatment areas between patient sessions.
  • Prepare necessary equipment for dialysis treatments and document appropriately.
  • Conduct pre-treatment machine alarm tests.
  • Ensure prompt cleanup of any blood spills in accordance with facility policies.
  • Efficiently manage supplies to minimize waste.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:

  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives.
  • Accurately enter treatment data into clinical applications in a timely manner.
  • Review treatment documentation for completeness and accuracy.
  • Prepare initial patient charts and ensure proper documentation is maintained.
  • Collect and label laboratory samples following established protocols.
  • Coordinate with lab couriers for specimen collection.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a state and/or national certification approved by the Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS) or a high school diploma/G.E.D. with certification requirements to be met within the designated timeline.
  • Compliance with all relevant state licensure and training requirements.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous experience in patient care within a healthcare setting is preferred.
  • Candidates must pass Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of the dialysis training program and CPR certification.
