Job Overview

Position Title: Culinary Specialist

Reports To: Sous Chef / Chef

Status: Regular; Non-Exempt; Full-Time

Mission:

Meals on Wheels is dedicated to providing essential services that enable seniors to maintain their independence and dignity in their own homes.

Position Summary:

The ideal candidate will possess substantial culinary expertise and experience, adhering to established menus and recipes while thriving in a fast-paced kitchen environment. A keen eye for detail is essential, along with a commitment to upholding high standards of quality, cleanliness, presentation, food safety, sanitation, and operational efficiency.

This role requires adherence to a structured schedule, with responsibilities extending until all meals are properly prepared and stored. Flexibility to work additional hours, including weekends and holidays, may be necessary to meet kitchen demands. The position involves working in Cold Storage and Freezer environments.

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Cook, preferably in high-volume settings.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively regarding job responsibilities and safety regulations.
  • Experience with cook-chill equipment is advantageous.
  • Innovative mindset with the capacity to propose operational improvements.
  • Thorough understanding of kitchen systems, operations, procedures, and policies.
  • CA Food Handler's Certification is required within 30 days of hire.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment testing (Background Check, Physical Abilities Test).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare high-quality meals by following production recipes and meal prep guidelines in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety standards, product specifications, and recipes for all menu items.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization at each workstation, including proper sanitation practices.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and conduct evaluations of kitchen operations and food presentation.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and management.
  • Meet daily production goals and deadlines.
  • Set up the kitchen with necessary cooking utensils and equipment.
  • Measure and prepare ingredients for menu items, ensuring freshness and quality.
  • Store food items at appropriate temperatures and report any discrepancies.
  • Maintain cleanliness in food prep areas and ensure compliance with health regulations.
  • Study production recipes and gather necessary ingredients for upcoming meals.
  • Collaborate with the Chef and fellow cooks to prepare scheduled meals and plan for future production.
  • Maintain accurate inventories and rotate stock as per established procedures.
  • Label and date all stored products appropriately.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

This position requires the ability to lift, carry, pull, or push up to 50 lbs unassisted and involves work in Cold Storage and Freezer areas.

Compensation: $23.50 per hour. This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position with an anticipated schedule of 40 hours per week.
