Position Overview

As a Lead Research Scientist in Environmental Chemistry, you will oversee a team of Research Scientists who are responsible for planning, organizing, and executing scientific research projects of moderate complexity. The Environmental Chemistry Laboratory serves the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) and other departments within the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA) by providing specialized expertise and laboratory capabilities in analytical and environmental chemistry.


Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and manage a diverse scientific team, including Research Scientists, Laboratory Assistants, and Visiting Scholars.
  • Oversee laboratory operations, including quality assurance, data analysis, budgeting, procurement, and technological advancements.
  • Plan and direct the activities of the Human and Environmental Monitoring Section, ensuring effective management and review of staff performance.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to team members.
  • Guide staff and initiate disciplinary actions when necessary.

Qualifications We Seek

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Strong leadership skills with experience in managing scientific research teams focused on developing innovative methods and conducting sample analyses.
  • Expertise in implementing quality management systems and managing budgets and service contracts.
  • Proficiency in utilizing advanced technologies, including high-resolution mass spectrometry.
  • The ability to interpret mass spectral data for identifying and quantifying environmental chemicals.
  • Experience collaborating with governmental agencies or academic institutions on research initiatives.
