About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Biomedical Engineer to join our team at Abbott Laboratories. As a key member of our research and development team, you will be responsible for conceiving, executing, and communicating novel multi-disciplinary research or development strategies that achieve project and area goals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and execute laboratory research, maintaining broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories.
  • Initiate, direct, and execute scientific research and/or development strategies in research and/or development, investigating the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems.
  • Develop productive collaborations and communication with other groups, across scientific disciplines, and with scientists outside of Abbott, seeking expertise in the field within the company and possibly externally.
  • Interact with suppliers to resolve scientific and technical challenges.
  • Assume a high level of responsibility in setting and achieving team goals, independently identifying and communicating issues and opportunities, guiding the formation of research and development strategy and tactics.
  • Plan resource allocation and distribution, holding teams accountable for meeting milestones, recognizing the need for new or additional resources and escalating to leadership as needed.
  • May act as spokesperson on corporate research and development, advising top management, and participating in the development of patent applications.
  • Interface with various departments, serving as an internal consultant, and participating in lab safety, potentially leading or recommending new procedures.
  • Keep accurate and current records of research and/or project activities according to Abbott policies, responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system.
  • May be responsible for hiring and managing up to 4 junior to mid-level scientists.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree with 10 years of experience in research in an industrial or academic setting, or Doctorate's Degree with 4 years of industry experience.
  • Familiarity with standard laboratory techniques.
  • Ability to present orally and in writing at a professional level.
  • Ability to perform proficiently under applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Highly effective writer and oral communicator of research, technical, and regulatory issues, presenting original work at internal and external meetings.
  • Competence in authorship of peer-reviewed scientific papers and/or patents.
  • Advanced computer skills, proactive to learn new systems and processes.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related disciplines, familiarity with CAD tools.
  • Experience with industrial control systems, specifying, configuring, and troubleshooting controllers (particularly Aerotech) and electrical systems.
  • Experience programming PLCs and Visual Studio.NET.
  • Experience with industrial laser systems, particularly scan head-based systems, laser system bring-up and troubleshooting, beam alignment, cut job parameter development, and laser safety best practices.
