The primary responsibility of the Lead Linux Systems Engineer is to manage Linux-based operating systems. This role will be pivotal in establishing and maintaining Knowledge Management Practices by developing, revising, and retiring work instructions and Standard Operating Procedures. The position involves addressing escalations from clients and junior administrators, providing technical mentorship, collaborating with technology vendors to resolve intricate issues, and participating in major incident calls and client discussions as a Subject Matter Expert.

Key Responsibilities (What You'll Do)

Essential hands-on experience includes:

  • Linux LVM, OVM, KVM, RHEV, Docker containers/OpenShift.
  • Understanding of Red Hat licensing and subscription models.
  • Network-based OS installation (Kickstart) and management of Red Hat Linux, clusters, and satellite systems.
  • Operating system upgrades and security patch management, including scheduling, cron jobs, and transaction logging.
  • Security hardening of operating systems.
  • Network-based file sharing protocols (FTP/NFS/CIFS/SAMBA).
  • File system and user management.
  • Experience in deploying, maintaining, and supporting Linux server infrastructures and storage systems in an enterprise context.
  • Accountable for resolving all technical incidents escalated by the Level 2 team.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain documentation and operational guides.
  • Conduct thorough root cause analysis and develop actionable plans for implementing solutions.
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert, addressing technical inquiries during conference calls or email communications.
  • The ideal candidate will possess advanced troubleshooting skills in Linux-based operating systems within large enterprise environments.
  • Familiarity with advanced Linux service functionalities and troubleshooting, along with proficiency in Linux Shell (bash) scripting, Python scripting, Satellite/Spacewalk management, and XML-RPC.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience supporting enterprise environments.
  • Knowledge of VMware architecture and functionality is advantageous.
  • Understanding of SAN/NAS and clustering services and technologies is a plus.
  • Availability for after-hours support and on-call rotations as required.
Qualifications (Who You Are)
  • RHCE certification or equivalent qualification.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to convey technical concepts effectively.
  • Ability to research server issues and related components efficiently.
  • Capability to multitask and prioritize work effectively while assessing risks and consequences.
  • Experience collaborating with hardware vendors to resolve software and hardware issues.
  • Ability to work independently and complete tasks within deadlines.
  • 3+ years of experience in server administration and break/fix responsibilities.
  • Understanding of virtual platform technologies such as VMware.
  • Familiarity with remote management console technologies and their functionalities.
