Overview

Primary Responsibilities

The role involves supporting the physician and/or Advanced Care Practitioner (ACP) in delivering patient care, managing patient intake during office visits, maintaining documentation, administering vaccines and medications, and performing clerical, environmental, and organizational duties. Additionally, it includes assisting with appointment scheduling and maintaining medical records.

Key Duties

  1. Exhibits the knowledge and skills required to provide care for patients across various age groups, including newborns, children, adolescents, adults, and seniors, relevant to the specialty of the practice.
  2. Engages in pre-visit planning with the provider and care team.
  3. Adheres to the patient intake and rooming procedures established at the practice.
  4. May involve administering medications, including injections.
  5. Records vital signs, height, and weight.
  6. May assist in reviewing medication history and updating the medication list.
  7. May support the fulfillment of relevant health maintenance requirements.
  8. Conducts Point of Care testing (POCT) as per standing orders or provider directives.
  9. Follows standard precautions and complies with Atrium Health Policies, OSHA standards, CLIA regulations, and The Joint Commission standards as applicable.
  10. Reports on the patient's condition and reactions to the provider following procedures, medication administration, or treatments.
  11. Assists patients with inquiries regarding prescription refills, appointment scheduling, and referral authorizations as necessary.
  12. Participates in electronic documentation of care as directed by the provider.
  13. Completes CLIA-approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing in compliance with CLIA standards. Conducts Quality Control and maintenance for Point of Care in-office lab procedures, as applicable.
  14. Performs venipuncture and may assist in collecting specimens of body fluids such as urine and blood for laboratory testing. Completes lab requisitions and prepares specimens for collection.
  15. Responsible for monitoring inventory and managing stock of medications, narcotics, and emergency medical supplies specific to the practice.
  16. Ensures that all ordered laboratory and diagnostic tests are tracked and logged, presenting all test results to the provider.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification is mandatory and must be maintained. Candidates must possess one of the following:
  • a) Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • b) Intermediate EMT or Paramedic Program with three years of prior clinical experience.
  • c) Structured military training with a clinical focus as per DD214.
  • d) Graduate of an Accredited School of Professional Nursing.
  • e) Three years of on-the-job training and successful completion of Atrium Health Medical Group approved competency assessment.
Certification / License: Must be recognized/certified as a CMA or RMA by one of the following National Organizations:
  • American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
  • National HealthCareer Association (NHA)
  • National Healthcare Worker's Association (NHCWA)
  • National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
  • American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA)
  • American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
  • National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA)

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

This role consistently requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling. The ability to lift and support the weight of 35 pounds is necessary for handling patients, medical equipment, and supplies. There may be exposure to communicable diseases. Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing Basic English is required. Candidates must possess intact senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch, along with manual dexterity.

Preferred Qualifications

National Certification from a Medical Association is preferred.
