Key Responsibilities
The Addiction Treatment Counselor II plays a vital role in supporting the treatment team at Hoag Addiction Treatment Center (HATC). This position involves conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, making referral recommendations, and engaging in discharge planning. The counselor provides education and direct therapeutic interventions for patients and their families throughout the treatment process. This role is essential in ensuring that the goals outlined in the patient's treatment plan are met while assisting in clinical care and case management.
Additional Duties
In addition to the above responsibilities, the Counselor II will assist with the admissions and discharges process, ensuring that all necessary documentation is completed. The counselor will conduct screenings and intake assessments as required, following the guidelines set forth in the incidental medical services (IMS) policies and procedures manual. Providing clients with an orientation to the program, including rules and a tour of the facility, is also a key responsibility. The counselor will advocate for clients in crisis situations and facilitate group counseling sessions, ensuring that all documentation related to patient care and treatment is completed accurately and promptly.
Collaboration and Communication
Active participation in case conferences and staff meetings is expected. The Counselor II will lead community meetings for clients and encourage participation in self-help groups, such as AA/NA. Communication with healthcare providers, including physicians and nurse practitioners, regarding treatment plans and medication management is essential. The counselor will observe and document medication self-administration in the client's electronic medical record (EMR).
Documentation and Reporting
Daily living activities and vital information must be documented meticulously. The counselor is responsible for recording patient behaviors and notifying the Supervisor of Addiction Care and Clinical Manager of any significant changes. Change of shift reports will be received and presented as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree in Behavioral Science or Allied Mental Health preferred.
- A minimum of two years of experience in addiction or behavioral health is required.
- Three years of experience in an addiction or behavioral health environment is preferred.
- Familiarity with CARF and/or JCAHO accreditation standards is required.
- Knowledge of 12-step programs, Smart Recovery, and other treatment models is essential.
- Understanding of HIPAA regulations is necessary.
- For SolMar Retreat: Knowledge of incidental medical services/MAT per IMS policies and procedures is required.

- CATC II - Certified Addiction Treatment Counselor II
- or CATC III - Certified Addiction Treatment Counselor III
- or CATC IV - Certified Addiction Treatment Counselor IV
- or CADC II - Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor II
- or CADC III - Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor III
- or LAADC - Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor
- BLS-AHA Basic Life Support certification required at hire.
