Key Responsibilities

Natural Areas Maintenance Tech I

  • Adhere to established safety protocols to ensure the well-being of oneself, colleagues, community members, and visitors.
  • Deliver outstanding customer service both internally and externally.
  • Actively seek opportunities to enhance service delivery through maintenance and repair initiatives.
  • Engage in general maintenance of natural areas, including but not limited to trail upkeep, vegetation management, dog park care, community garden support, litter removal, and other assigned tasks.
  • Assist in executing vegetation and wildlife management strategies, as well as improvements to native habitats (e.g., drill seeding, herbicide application, and mowing to control invasive species, drainage repairs, etc.).
  • Maintain an understanding of resource management practices, including ecosystems management, wildlife stewardship, and trail maintenance.
  • Operate various open space equipment independently, including mid-sized machinery for excavation, mowing, and snow removal (e.g., tractors, mowers, plows, quads, trucks, chainsaws, etc.).
  • Utilize the Asset Essentials system to complete work orders and manage assets.
  • Participate in the snow removal program, adjusting schedules as necessary, which may involve weekend and evening hours.
  • Assist in the setup and takedown of equipment for special events across parks and recreation programs.

Natural Areas Maintenance Tech II

  • In addition to the above responsibilities...
  • Implement vegetation and wildlife management plans, and enhance native areas (e.g., drill seeding, herbicide application, and mowing for invasive species control, drainage repairs, etc.).
  • Be a key member of the snow crew, adjusting schedules in response to snow events, which may include weekend and overnight hours.
  • Undertake special projects and tasks specific to natural areas management as assigned.
Additional Duties

Participate as a member of various employee committees and planning teams as assigned. Identify and recommend actions to ensure a safe experience for visitors and to protect natural resources and facilities.

Qualifications

Natural Areas Maintenance Tech I (up to $25.08/hr)

  • Associate's degree in Natural Resource Management or a related field.
  • Two years of experience in natural resource management.
  • A combination of equivalent education and experience.

Natural Areas Maintenance Tech II (up to $29.04/hr)

  • Associate's degree in Natural Resource Management or a related field.
  • Three years of experience in natural resource management.
  • A combination of equivalent education and experience.
Essential Skills and Abilities
  • Proficient knowledge of equipment, materials, and supplies relevant to natural areas management. Skilled in the safe and effective use of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to supervise and coordinate projects for individuals with court-ordered community service.
  • Understanding of indigenous vegetation, wildlife, and range management concepts, with the ability to analyze and resolve resource management conflicts.
  • Capable of working independently and completing daily tasks according to the work schedule.
  • Physical ability to lift heavy objects and endure long periods of standing and walking.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to understand, follow, and convey written and oral instructions.
  • Establish effective working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, and the public.
Special Requirements
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Colorado Department of Agriculture Rangeland and Right of Way herbicide applicators license within 12 months of hire.
Tools and Equipment

Pickup trucks, hand and power tools, loaders, tractors, excavators, dingos, skid steers, personal computers, copiers, scanners, printers, and cell phones.

Work Schedule

Typically, Monday through Friday from 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Work schedules may vary based on the time of year, weather conditions, projects, events, programs, meetings, and staffing levels, and may include evening, early morning, weekend, and overtime hours. Schedules may vary seasonally.

This position is part of the on-call/weekend schedule and snow removal program as scheduled by the Open Space Supervisor/Manager. Regular and predictable attendance is a critical function of the job.
