The Performance Improvement (PI) Specialist serves as a pivotal resource in process enhancement. This role demands a deep understanding of process optimization, team leadership, coaching, and change management. Acting as an internal advisor, the PI Specialist collaborates with all levels of the healthcare system and serves as the main point of contact for designated service lines and departments.

The PI Specialist is responsible for implementing the organization's quality enhancement initiatives utilizing various quality tools and methodologies, along with facilitation skills and collaborative approaches. This role includes conducting initial assessments of local operations and formulating prioritized action plans. The PI Specialist will lead regular Lean model cell team meetings to ensure continuous improvement of key performance indicators. Furthermore, this individual will leverage data-driven decision-making tools to inform organizational strategies and uphold regulatory compliance.

In addition, the PI Specialist will identify best practices to uncover improvement opportunities and elevate organizational performance. Collaborating closely with operational and medical leadership, this role will focus on executing strategies aimed at enhancing processes and outcomes. Knowledge of accreditation and certification standards is essential, as the PI Specialist will identify deficiencies and assist in survey processes, including Peer Review activities as needed. Regular updates will be provided to facility leadership or governance regarding the progress of initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • A degree in Nursing, Industrial Engineering, or a relevant Master's degree, accompanied by 3-5 years of pertinent clinical experience or 1-3 years in process improvement is required.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a hospital setting is necessary.
  • 1-3 years of experience in performance improvement is preferred.
  • Experience with process improvement methodologies such as Lean or Six Sigma, PDSA/PDCA, data collection, analysis, and team facilitation is advantageous.
  • A valid RN license is required, if applicable. Candidates with at least 3 years of PI experience must obtain CPHQ certification within one year of hire; those without PI experience are encouraged to obtain CPHQ within three years.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is essential.
  • Experience with databases (e.g., MIDAS) and electronic data warehouses is required.
  • Strong data analysis capabilities are necessary.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are a must.
  • Self-motivated with strong problem-solving skills.
  • A comprehensive understanding of hospital systems and standards of care is required.
  • Strong knowledge of team dynamics and development.
  • Familiarity with adult learning principles is beneficial.
  • Ability to facilitate performance improvement teams effectively.
  • Exceptional organizational skills for process development and coordination.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with all staff levels and inspire others.
  • Proven organizational development skills and the ability to manage diverse tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license, if applicable, must be maintained.
