Position Overview
Luminar is in search of a seasoned Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer. This role involves guiding a team of mechanical engineers in the creation of lidar sensor products, encompassing design, prototyping, testing, industrialization, and production release. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to tackle complex engineering challenges independently while leveraging insights from cross-functional experts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and prototype innovative technology concepts and product architectures for diverse designs, focusing on mechanical assemblies and systems suitable for high-volume manufacturing.
  • Balance hands-on engineering tasks with leadership duties, promoting best practices in design, development, and testing throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Oversee hardware from initial concept to real-world application, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to navigate the full product development cycle, including design criteria establishment, requirements collaboration, design reviews, validation testing, and system-level optimizations.
  • Manage external suppliers during the design phase and facilitate the transition to industrialization, ensuring timely delivery of prototypes, samples, tooling, and equipment.
  • Design, assemble, and integrate prototypes for both internal and external sample builds.
  • Lead the DFMEA process to identify potential failure modes in intricate mechanical systems and troubleshoot issues effectively.
  • Collaborate with project management to develop product schedules, oversee design development, and track milestones and deliverables across multiple projects.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Optical/Electro-Mechanical Engineering.
  • Over 10 years of experience in mechanical design, analysis, and testing within product development.
  • At least 3 years of experience leading projects involving complex mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in CAD detail design (Solidworks or Creo preferred), including large assembly management and high-quality engineering drawing creation incorporating GD&T and bill of material management through PDM/PLM systems.
  • Demonstrated ownership of a complex assembly from initial design through production ramp-up.
  • Expertise in applying mechanical engineering principles, theories, and concepts to optical and electronic mechanical products.
  • Extensive experience in cross-functional product troubleshooting, failure analysis, root cause determination, and corrective action implementation.
  • Strong skills in preparing conceptual models, conducting trade studies, leading design reviews, and managing engineering change documentation and impact assessments.
  • Knowledge of various manufacturing processes and the application of DFx principles in designs for automated assembly.
  • Experience in designing die-cast, metal injection molded (MIM), and injection molded components.
  • Ability to plan timelines for design tasks effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD in an engineering discipline.
  • 3+ years of professional experience in opto-mechanical engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience leading a team of mechanical engineers in cross-functional product development projects.
  • Proven expertise in sensor integration and packaging, with hands-on experience in various electro-optical technologies (lenses, cameras, lasers, detectors, etc.) and their application in mechanical systems (Lidar preferred).
  • Experience in designing and specifying mechanical mechanisms and motor assemblies.

Compensation and Benefits
The base pay for this role ranges from $150,000 to $180,000 annually, with individual compensation determined by work location and other factors such as job-related skills, experience, and education.
