Rail Conductor and Engineer Job Summary

Pacific Rail Services is seeking a skilled Rail Conductor and Engineer to join our team at the Union Pacific Houston, TX Auto Terminal. As a key member of our crew, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient movement of rail equipment, ensuring the accurate placement of rail cars for loading and unloading trains in the rail yard.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Train Engineer with the movement of rail equipment, including locomotives, rail cars, and tracks, in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Maintain an organized and efficient rail yard by moving rail cars and freeing rail tracks for incoming rail traffic.
  • Manage rail track switches to direct rail cars to appropriate tracks.
  • Connect and disconnect rail air hoses as needed to consolidate rail cars efficiently.
  • Lead job briefings with the Supervisors and crew prior to work beginning.
  • Ensure compliance with HAZMAT and OSHA Regulations, reporting any incidents to the supervisory team immediately.
  • Wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) as required, including safety vests, safety glasses, hearing protection, and safety toe boots.
  • Maintain clear communication with Train Engineer/Operator and other crew members while moving locomotives using verbal, hand, or radio signals.
  • Participate in daily safety briefings.
  • Inspect rail equipment for damage and notify the operator and supervisor immediately if issues are found.
  • Handle rail equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain awareness and organization within the rail yard, including attention to ground surface conditions.
Requirements:
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Prior Conductor/Engineer experience required.
  • Advanced knowledge of the railroad industry from vocational education, apprenticeship, on-the-job training, or similar experience.
  • Pass a vision and hearing test.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for coordinating with various individuals.
Work Environment:

This role requires working in an ambient outdoor environment with varying conditions, including rain, snow, ice, heat, wind, and cold. You will travel throughout the yard and transfer station by walking and/or driving. The noise level is loud and continuous. You must be able to work in a hazardous environment and have the physical ability to see and hear fast-moving equipment while remaining safe.
