Job Description

Dawson is seeking a highly skilled Senior Accountant to join our team. As a key member of our Finance department, you will be responsible for operational financial management and accounting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles for not-for-profit agencies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the financial management activities of the agency, ensuring sound, accurate, and timely accounting and reporting of financial data.
  • Accountable for accurate and timely recording of accounting transactions, preparation, and submission of all required reports, and maintenance of companies' system of internal controls.
  • Maintain agency accounting system in consultation with the Finance Director, including chart of accounts, opening and closing accounting periods, and user administration of the accounting system.
  • Create reports using the accounting system report writer for ongoing use in meeting funder and agency requirements, and train other staff in the use of the reports.
  • Oversee and contribute to regular operation of the accounting activities, including reviewing and posting accounts payable invoices, and coordinating the entry of weekly cash disbursements.
  • Regularly monitor and reconcile transactions posted to the HUD bank account, and review weekly cash receipt transactions entered in the accounting system.
  • Act as backup for positive pay upload to online banking system after each check run, and prepare and/or review monthly journal entries.
  • Assist with reconciling general ledger, accounts receivable, and accounts payable balances with other accounting records, and review and post necessary corrections identified by the Staff Accountant's monthly reconciliation of pledge receivables.
  • Monitor grants receivables by conducting monthly review of the aged receivables reports, and request the Grants Director to follow up with funders on overdue invoices.
  • Assist with monitoring, reviewing, and updating weekly cash availability report, and perform monthly and quarterly analytics to ensure accuracy of accounting system data.
  • Assist in the annual financial statement audit, including coordinating year-end close of accounting records, recording of year-end accruals, depreciation, and other year-end entries as needed.
  • Reconcile certain designated accounts as of the end of the fiscal year, and lead the preparation of banking confirms and prepare other account confirmations.
  • Create and maintain monthly insurance benefit allocation spreadsheets, and assist with preparation of public and private grants data analyses and reports.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Knowledge of functional aspects of accounting departments, including accounts payable, payroll, and accounts receivable.
  • Working knowledge of automated accounting systems, well-developed financial analysis capabilities, and demonstrated ability to manage computer operations and applications.
  • Knowledge of financial institutions and related cash management procedures and practices.
  • Ability to independently assume responsibility for projects and processes assigned within the Finance department.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately attend to detail.
  • Strong analytical and reasoning abilities.
  • Accounts payable, payroll, and/or other finance/accounting experience necessary.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word/Excel/Access/Outlook) necessary.
  • Five years' experience in an office setting, three years of related work experience required.
  • Experience working in a not-for-profit setting strongly preferred.
