Job Summary

The Department of Fish and Wildlife is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Environmental Scientist Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our Habitat Conservation Cannabis Unit, you will play a critical role in implementing the Lake and Streambed Alteration program (LSA) and reviewing projects under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and California Endangered Species Act (CESA) permits.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement the LSA function and review projects under CEQA and CESA permits
  • Work with the Unit Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory) to develop and implement environmental conservation strategies
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, including cannabis cultivators, to ensure compliance with environmental regulations
  • Conduct fieldwork, including driving a 4-wheel drive vehicle or hiking long distances in rugged terrain
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local communities, stakeholders, and other government agencies

Requirements

  • Master's degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in environmental conservation, habitat management, or a related field
  • Strong knowledge of California fish and wildlife resources, ecological principles, and environmental laws
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with frequent travel to project sites and meetings. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a variety of settings, including offices, laboratories, and field locations. A valid Class C driver's license and ability to operate a car, all-terrain vehicle, or 4WD vehicle are required.
