POSITION OVERVIEW:

Certified Surgical Technologists (CSTs) play a crucial role in supporting surgeons during both invasive and non-invasive surgical interventions. Their primary responsibility is to ensure a safe and efficient operating room environment, confirming that all equipment is functioning correctly and that procedures are conducted in a manner that prioritizes patient safety.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The responsibilities of a Certified Surgical Technologist include:

  1. Managing surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary for various procedures.
  2. Possessing a comprehensive understanding of the surgical procedures being performed and anticipating the surgeon's needs.
  3. Ensuring high-quality patient care throughout the surgical process while maintaining a sterile environment.
  4. Assisting the surgeon and/or First Assistant during operations by executing technical tasks as required.

This role is distinct from that of the First Assistant and may occasionally overlap with the scrub role.


EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL CRITERIA:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited surgical technology program.
  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in an operating room setting is preferred.
  • Active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, or the ability to obtain it within 30 days of hire.
  • Flexibility in working hours and willingness to be on call.
  • Readiness to participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Thorough understanding of patient safety and privacy rights.
  • Ability to maintain composure and skill under pressure.
  • Team-oriented mindset.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

South Peninsula Hospital is a 40-bed facility that provides both acute and long-term care. The surgical unit is equipped with two general operating rooms and one endoscopy suite. The role requires prolonged periods of standing in brightly lit environments.

Individuals in this position may encounter exposure to infectious diseases, including blood-borne pathogens, potential muscle strains, needle stick injuries, and anesthetic gases. The physical demands of the role are moderate, and all tasks are performed indoors.
