This role is essential to the mission and operations of the Y, a prominent nonprofit organization dedicated to community service. The Early Childhood Educator at the Central Connecticut Coast YMCA is tasked with providing direct oversight and guidance to a group of children aged 3-5 years. This position is responsible for implementing a curriculum that promotes the social, physical, spiritual, and cognitive development of young children. The Early Childhood Educator ensures the safety and well-being of each child in accordance with established guidelines and organizational policies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Exemplifies the core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in interactions with members, colleagues, guests, volunteers, and vendors.
  • Engages in positive and proactive communication with supervisors, staff, program participants, and parents.
  • Maintains cleanliness and safety of program areas and equipment.
  • Remains vigilant and attentive while on duty, ensuring constant visual monitoring of participants and active involvement in all program activities.
  • Designs activities that encourage children to explore their interests and develop their skills.
  • Provides individualized support and tutoring to children in small groups under the guidance of the lead teacher to reinforce learning objectives.
  • Establishes schedules and routines that balance physical activity, rest, and playtime to promote positive outcomes.
  • Observes and identifies any emotional or developmental concerns in children, communicating these to parents as necessary.
  • Maintains records of each child's progress, routines, and interests, keeping parents informed about their child's development.
  • Adheres to and enforces all organizational policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including those related to child safety and supervision.
  • Acts as an ambassador for all YMCA programs, focusing on Child Care initiatives and fostering member engagement.
  • Complies with all relevant procedures and guidelines, including health and safety protocols, child care discipline, and attendance reporting.
  • Understands and implements emergency procedures, responding promptly to any incidents in line with organizational policies.
  • Participates in all required meetings and training sessions.
Qualifications:
  • Must provide documentation of a physical examination and TB test upon hire, with updates every two years.
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in early childhood education or a related field is required.
  • Possession of an ECTC credential at either the Associate's or Bachelor's Degree level with appropriate endorsements is necessary.
  • Completion of a background check and fingerprinting forms is required within the first month of employment.
  • Ability to remain calm and objective under pressure and when faced with challenging behaviors from children.
  • Must be observant, safety-focused, and capable of responding quickly and effectively in emergencies, demonstrating adaptability to program needs.
  • Connecticut Child Care CPR/First Aid certification must be obtained within six months of hire and maintained thereafter.
  • Certification in the Administration of Medications is preferred.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development as mandated by the State of Connecticut Office of Early Childhood licensing requirements.
