Job Title: Director of Accounting

Under the direction of the Department of Finance, the Director of Accounting will oversee the General Accounting Division and Grant and Project Accounting Division, ensuring the efficient management of financial accounts and grants management.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Direct supervisors of accounting units in overseeing professional staff engaged in managing financial accounts and grants management.
  • Monitor operations and direct the development of systems and procedures to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Develop goals, objectives, and work standards and conduct performance evaluations of supervisory staff.
  • Review and approve various actions or reports, such as program and operational budgets and amendments, audit reports, spending adjustments, and fund re-allocations.
  • Direct and participate in the design and implementation of new computerized accounting systems to improve the effectiveness of financial reporting.
  • Manage and monitor the performance of contractors and vendors.
  • Meet with managers to determine fiscal information needs and direct the preparation of financial reports.
  • Interpret general accounting principles and financial procedures to management and ensure the City of Chicago maintains compliance with federal and state grant fiscal requirements and regulations.
  • Oversee the conduct of audits performed by independent accounting firms and regulatory audits, coordinate the preparation of replies to auditors' findings, and develop processes and procedures to implement audit recommendations.
  • Direct staff training and development activities.
  • Maintain and update policies and procedures for use by accounting units, various external reviewers, and auditors.
  • Provide guidance on accounting-related issues to staff and other City and government agencies.
Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in accounting or a directly related field with 15 credit hours in accounting, plus five years of professional accounting experience, of which two years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing recent experience with GAAP accounting and financial reporting, grants management, federal and state regulations, managing third-party vendor contracts, fixed assets accounting, preparing financial statements, and working in an accounting firm.

The selected candidate will be required to successfully complete an interview, which will include a written exercise and/or skills assessment.
