Job Overview

Position: Deputy Sheriff I - Correction

OBJECTIVE
To perform foundational law enforcement responsibilities aimed at ensuring a secure environment for the community and safeguarding legal rights as defined by various laws.

SUPERVISION
Operates under the general or close oversight of a senior authority while undergoing training or on a situational basis.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
No supervisory duties.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (May include but are not limited to the following)

Corrections:

  • Engages in continuous on-the-job training; participates in POST training sessions to gain knowledge of duties, responsibilities, and the correctional environment; assists in managing inmate grievances.
  • Oversees inmates in the county jail following established protocols, ensuring all needs (physical, medical, etc.) are met during detention; administers medications as prescribed.
  • Handles various aspects of inmate processing; books individuals; assesses offense status and classification to determine appropriate security measures; conducts releases as mandated by court orders; performs necessary searches.
  • Monitors inmate behavior to avert disturbances and escapes; inspects inmates and cells for prohibited items; patrols designated areas for signs of misconduct and reports findings to supervisors; supervises inmates during recreational and meal times.
  • Checks locks, doors, and gates for tampering; conducts inspections; applies disciplinary measures as needed to maintain order among inmates.
  • Accompanies inmates during transport between facilities, ensuring safety and security; secures inmates in cells after thorough searches.
  • Safeguards valuables and follows standard procedures for their management; organizes and serves meals to inmates and facilitates medical assistance when necessary; administers prescribed medications.
  • Prepares documentation including arrest records, reports, bookings, releases, and photographic identification of inmates; assists in maintaining various records and databases.
  • Supervises inmate work details both inside and outside the facility; performs general maintenance of the jail and surrounding areas; repairs safety and security equipment; ensures cleanliness of cells and recreation areas.
  • May participate in the transport of inmates across state lines.

Court Security:

  • Implements security plans to protect court personnel and facilities. Provides courtroom security during proceedings and safeguards judges and staff; patrols court facilities; investigates disturbances and takes appropriate actions to maintain order; documents security incidents.
  • Monitors courtroom conduct for compliance with regulations; removes or assists in the removal of individuals disrupting proceedings.
  • Assists the public and witnesses with inquiries regarding court procedures, without providing legal advice or discussing case merits.
  • May serve as a court Bailiff when necessary, managing courtroom activities, including jury supervision and evidence handling.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

1. Education and Experience:
A. High School diploma or GED, along with successful completion of the Police Officers Standards and Training Academy for Patrol or Correctional Officer Certification.
B. No prior experience required.
C. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

2. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Familiarity with modern law enforcement principles, procedures, and equipment; knowledge of applicable laws; basic investigative techniques; understanding of local geography; proficiency in English and technical writing. Competence in office practices and procedures; communication equipment; first aid techniques; and standard office machinery.

3. Special Qualifications:
Must be at least 21 years old.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
Must be willing to work rotating shifts and be on-call 24/7.
Must complete 40 hours of training annually to maintain certification.

4. Work Environment:
Functions are generally performed in a patrol vehicle or controlled environments, with frequent travel for patrol duties. The role involves a high degree of risk and requires physical readiness. Various mental skills are necessary, including attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
