Position: Deputy Sheriff I - Correction
OBJECTIVE
This role involves performing fundamental law enforcement tasks aimed at ensuring a secure environment for the community and safeguarding legal rights as dictated by applicable laws.
SUPERVISION STRUCTURE
Operates under the general or close oversight of a senior authority during training or specific assignments.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
No supervisory duties are assigned.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (May include one or more of the following tasks)
Corrections:
- Engages in continuous on-the-job training; participates in POST training sessions to learn about the responsibilities and environment associated with correctional duties; assists in managing inmate grievances.
- Oversees inmates within the county jail, adhering to established protocols while ensuring the comprehensive needs (physical, medical, etc.) of detainees are met; administers medications as prescribed.
- Handles various tasks related to inmate processing; books detainees; assesses offense status and classification to determine appropriate security measures; manages releases as mandated by court orders; conducts necessary searches.
- Monitors inmate behavior to prevent disturbances and escapes; conducts searches for contraband; patrols designated areas for signs of rule violations and reports findings to supervisors; supervises inmates during recreation and meal times.
- Checks locks, doors, and gates for tampering; performs inspections; applies disciplinary measures as required to maintain order among inmates.
- Accompanies inmates during transport to various locations, ensuring safety and security throughout the journey.
- Secures personal belongings and adheres to standard procedures for their management; organizes meal service for inmates and facilitates medical assistance when necessary; administers prescribed medications.
- Documents arrest records, including reports, bookings, releases, and photographic identification of detainees; assists in maintaining various records and reporting materials.
- Supervises inmates during work details both inside and outside the facility; engages in general maintenance of the jail and its surroundings; performs repairs on safety and security equipment; ensures cleanliness of cells and recreational areas.
- May participate in the transportation of inmates across state lines as required.
Court Security:
- Implements specific security plans to protect court personnel and facilities. Provides security during court proceedings and for judges and staff; patrols court facilities; investigates disturbances and takes necessary actions to uphold security; prepares written reports of incidents.
- Monitors courtroom activities for compliance with regulations; addresses violations and assists in maintaining order during proceedings.
- Provides assistance to witnesses and the public regarding court procedures, without offering legal advice or discussing case merits.
- May serve as a court Bailiff when necessary, performing duties such as announcing the judge's entrance, managing jurors, and handling evidence.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
1. Education and Experience:
A. High School diploma or GED, along with successful completion of the Police Officers Standards and Training Academy for Patrol or Correctional Officer Certification.
B. No prior experience required.
C. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
2. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Familiarity with modern law enforcement principles, procedures, and equipment; understanding of local, state, and federal laws; basic investigative techniques; knowledge of county geography; proficiency in English grammar and technical writing. Skills in operating motor vehicles in high-pressure situations; effective communication; and ability to react in emergencies.
3. Special Qualifications:
Must be at least 21 years old; possess a valid driver's license; be willing to work rotating shifts and be on-call 24/7; complete 40 hours of training annually to maintain certification.
4. Work Environment:
Most duties are performed in a patrol vehicle or controlled environments. Frequent travel is required for patrol positions. The role involves exposure to hazardous situations and requires physical readiness and mental acuity.
