About the Role

AltaPointe Health is seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Peer Specialist to join our Adult Residential Services team. As a Peer Specialist, you will play a vital role in providing social interaction, promoting recovery-oriented skills, and assisting consumers in developing advocacy skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide Social Interaction: Develop social skills and help consumers gain insight into their mental illness through individual and group interactions.
  • Promote Recovery-Oriented Skills: Help consumers achieve their treatment plan goals by promoting recovery-oriented skills and activities.
  • Establish Linkages: Facilitate consumers' active use of community resources and establish linkages to support their recovery.
  • Empower Consumers: Assist consumers in developing empowerment skills through self-advocacy and advocate on their behalf when needed.
  • Support Staff and Consumers: Assist staff and consumers in understanding the recovery process and share your unique experiences to promote rehabilitation.
  • Plan Recreational Activities: Work with recreation staff to plan and implement recreational activities for consumers.
  • Conduct Community Meetings: Conduct community meetings with consumers in each assigned group home.
  • Lead Peer Support Groups: Conduct peer support groups for adult day treatment programs.
  • Document Consumer Responses: Document individualized consumer responses to services provided in a timely and accurate manner.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Personal Experience with Mental Health Services: Must be a current or former recipient of mental health services for at least one year.
  • Valid Driver's License: Must have a valid, verifiable driver's license, a good driving record, reliable transportation, and verifiable vehicle liability insurance.
  • Knowledge of Mental Health System: Must have demonstrated experience with and knowledge of the Alabama public mental health system.
  • Knowledge of Adult Competencies: Must have knowledge of adult-specific competencies, including psychiatric disorders, cultural diversity, behavior management, crisis intervention, and psychiatric rehabilitation principles.
