Role Overview:

As a software engineer on the Runtime team, you will be instrumental in developing the next generation of distributed data storage and processing systems. These systems are designed to surpass the performance of specialized SQL query engines while offering the flexibility and programming abstractions necessary to support a wide range of workloads, including ETL and data science.

Key Projects:

  • Apache SparkTM: Contribute to the leading open-source framework for big data.
  • Data Plane Storage: Develop reliable and high-performance services and client libraries for managing vast amounts of data on cloud storage solutions.
  • Delta Lake: Create a storage management system that merges the scalability of data lakes with the performance of data warehouses, simplifying complex data engineering architectures.
  • Delta Pipelines: Streamline the orchestration and operation of numerous data pipelines, providing higher-level abstractions for efficient data management.
  • Performance Engineering: Innovate the next generation of query optimizers and execution engines that are fast, scalable, and robust.

Qualifications:

  • BS (or higher) in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Able to work towards a long-term vision with incremental milestones.
  • Driven by delivering value and impact to customers.
  • 5+ years of experience in production-level programming with Java, Scala, or C++.
  • Strong understanding of algorithms and data structures and their practical applications.
  • Experience with distributed systems, databases, and big data technologies (e.g., Apache Spark, Hadoop).
