JOB DESCRIPTION - Technical Software Project Leader - VIPER Moon Rover Tools

As humanity prepares to return to the Moon, the VIPER lunar rover mission aims to deploy a rover at the Moon's South Pole to analyze the distribution of water ice, setting the stage for future lunar exploration. This mission presents unique challenges, as the rover must navigate varying light conditions while maintaining communication with Earth and harnessing solar energy.

We are in search of a seasoned technical software project leader to become an integral part of our team focused on developing user tools for this groundbreaking mission. A passion for space exploration is a plus. You will oversee the management of rover navigation tools, developed on NASA's VERVE platform, and mission control software utilizing NASA's Open Mission Control Technologies (Open MCT). This role is primarily based at Qualified Technical Services but may involve occasional travel to collaborate with teams at various locations.

Key Responsibilities:

Engage in project planning, oversight, and management, including:

  • Collaborating with stakeholders to establish project priorities
  • Partnering with development leads and software engineers to define software deliverables, identify dependencies, assign tasks, and create schedules
  • Setting software objectives and monitoring progress against these targets
  • Managing project sprints and tracking issue resolution within the incident management system
  • Assessing and mitigating project risks
  • Coordinating with the ground data system project manager to ensure integration of user tools
  • Providing ongoing status updates to the team, management, and stakeholders
REQUIREMENTS - Technical Software Project Leader - VIPER Moon Rover Tools

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline

Experience: 10+ years in Software Development within Agile environments and 5+ years in Project Management

Qualifications, Skills, and Attributes:

  • Proven software project management expertise across various methodologies, particularly Agile/Lean
  • Experience in managing extensive, multi-year software development and integration initiatives
  • Practical knowledge of software project estimation techniques
  • Familiarity with system development life-cycle and engineering principles
  • Exceptional communication and decision-making skills

Preferred Skills:

  • PMP, CMMI, or Scrum certification
  • Experience managing critical software projects (e.g., aerospace or space-related)
  • Familiarity with open-source projects
  • Experience utilizing Atlassian tools (e.g., JIRA, Confluence)
