About the Job

This Behavioral Health Support Specialist position at the State of Ohio is an exciting opportunity for a dedicated and compassionate individual to join our team. As a key member of our mental health program, you will play a vital role in supporting individuals with complex needs.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development of individual treatment plans under the guidance of Psychiatric/MR nurses and behavioral health supervisors.
  • Recommend changes to offender treatment plans based on observed progress or regression and implement group or individual treatments as directed by the multidisciplinary treatment team.
  • Direct and monitor all aspects of offender activities, including vocational responsibilities and leisure/recreational activities.
  • Train offenders in self-help and daily living skills using various techniques such as behavior support programs, modeling, and over-hand instruction.
  • Assist in escorting offenders during off-unit therapeutic activities and training programs.
  • Perform specific tasks assigned by the treatment team, such as cooking, vocational tasks, fine/gross motor activities, and basic fundamental groups.
  • Facilitate leisure/recreational activities with offenders and document outcomes in electronic health records.
  • Institute crisis intervention for unacceptable behavior and prevent injury to offenders or others.
  • Complete incident reports as required and provide on-unit surveillance of offender behavior.
  • Investigate offender non-compliance with unit rules and recommend restrictions to the treatment team.
  • Respond to emergencies and recognize unusual conditions, taking appropriate action per institution policies.
  • Report and document problems or incidents directly to program and institutional staff.
  • Maintain emotional control and refrain from punitive activity to prevent escalating aggressive behavior.
  • Assist with institutional count and direct monitoring of offenders.
  • Provide orientation to newly transferred offenders and conduct offender interaction to clarify issues and resolve problems.
  • Chart and document offender response to programs, treatments, medications, and activities.
  • Complete shift attendant duties and unit operations reports and assist in escorting offenders to activities and appointments.
  • Interact appropriately with staff, offenders, and visitors at all times.
