Position Overview

The Tissue Processing Specialist plays a crucial role in the preparation and organization of tissue samples for analysis under the guidance of the Histology Supervisor or Histotechnologist. This position involves the precise embedding, cutting, and staining of biopsies to facilitate examination. Additionally, the specialist is responsible for maintaining and staining immunohistochemistry preparations to support the Histology Supervisor effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately compile, analyze, and correlate data and tissue samples in a timely manner.
  • Exhibit proficient manual dexterity to handle specimens and perform diagnostic procedures, including embedding, cutting, and staining biopsy samples using delicate tools and instruments.
  • Conduct complex testing procedures that require measurement, calculation, reasoning, analysis, and evaluation.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform essential tasks such as filing blocks, printing slides, and cutting controls efficiently.
  • Utilize sound judgment to maintain quality by performing daily cleaning and changing of stains and reagents.
  • Effectively operate laboratory equipment, adjust instruments, and manage laboratory information using computer systems.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This role does not involve supervisory duties.

Educational Qualifications

  • Required: High school diploma or equivalent; or a combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred: Completion of a one-year certificate program from a college or technical school; or three to six months of related experience; or an Associate's or Bachelor's degree.

Experience Requirements

  • Three to six months of relevant experience or training.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Required: Certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
  • Preferred: Continuing education in the field.

Additional Qualifications

To excel in this position, candidates should possess the following knowledge and skills:

  • Proficiency in current computer applications and software relevant to laboratory operations.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, particularly in relaying information to clients and colleagues.
  • Comprehensive understanding of histology terminology and the ability to communicate effectively in a professional setting.
  • General knowledge of histology equipment and the capability to perform necessary maintenance.
  • Professional demeanor, demonstrating ethical behavior, accountability, and the ability to work under pressure in a collaborative healthcare environment.
