Position Summary

The Culinary Specialist is tasked with the preparation of meals to be served, adhering to all relevant sanitation, health, organization, and personal hygiene standards while following established food production protocols. This role also involves the judicious use of kitchen supplies and equipment to reduce loss, waste, and fraud.

Work Schedule: Part-Time; Monday-Friday 2pm-6:30pm, with occasional weekend shifts as necessary.

Reporting Structure

The Culinary Specialist does not oversee any staff positions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of meals using established procedures to ensure nutritious and appealing food for clients, staff, and guests.
  • Assist in menu planning and the procurement of necessary inventory and supplies for food service.
  • Understand and comply with standard portion sizes, cooking methods, quality standards, and kitchen policies to ensure efficiency and consistency in meal delivery.
  • Operate kitchen equipment safely and efficiently to maintain a productive environment.
  • Adhere to established sanitation, personal hygiene, and health standards; observe proper food preparation, handling, and storage techniques to ensure a clean and safe kitchen.
  • Assist in managing inventory, organizing supplies, and monitoring stock levels to maintain necessary supplies.
  • Report equipment repair and maintenance needs to ensure a safe and efficient kitchen operation.
  • Participate in the opening and closing of the kitchen, setting up and tearing down as needed to ensure timely service and a secure kitchen environment.
  • Maintain reliable attendance and the ability to work according to business needs.

Additional Duties

  • Prepare and serve food for special events as assigned.
  • Perform related tasks as necessary, such as dishwashing, recycling preparation, and assisting with other projects as directed by the kitchen manager.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a commercial kitchen or related field.

Licenses/Certificates

  • No specific licenses or certificates required.

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of commercial kitchen operations and meal preparation standards.
  • Compliance with sanitation, personal hygiene, and health standards; ability to observe proper food handling and storage techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic communication.
  • Effective communication skills in both written and oral forms.
  • Demonstrated ability to build interpersonal relationships.
  • Independent judgment to solve problems.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and demands efficiently.

Frequent Requirements:

  • Standing for up to 2 hours at a time.

Occasional Requirements:

  • Standing for more than 2 hours at a time.

Work Environment

This position operates in an environment with minimal physical discomforts; may occasionally encounter drafts, noise, temperature variations, and odors. This role frequently works with equipment or performs tasks where carelessness could lead to serious injuries.
