Purpose

The Lead Specialist in Academic Technology Innovation will spearhead a range of initiatives for the Office of Academic Technology (OAT) aimed at enhancing educational practices through the application of generative AI technologies. This role will engage with essential academic technology partners to ensure that the generative AI tools, resources, and special projects at UT Austin are in alignment with university-wide academic technology standards. Key projects include overseeing the instructional design of the university's innovative AI Tutor. This position will play a crucial role in the design, development, implementation, and refinement of generative AI applications and digital resources to create tailored, interactive learning experiences that promote the responsible integration of AI in higher education.

Responsibilities

  • Instructional/Application Design and Development: Direct the creation and design of strategic generative AI projects to enhance the adoption of effective academic technologies and support the educational mission of the University. Collaborate with various stakeholders to develop and refine business requirements. Establish and execute user testing protocols to collect feedback and foster continuous enhancement. Ensure compliance with the Learning Technology Adoption Process (LTAP) and other academic technology standards.
  • Project Management and Collaboration: Act as the project lead for significant academic technology initiatives that promote the effective use of generative AI in education, coordinating with business and technical sponsors, engineers, UI/UX designers, third-party vendors, users, and other higher education institutions in Texas. Facilitate collaborations among campus stakeholders to develop standards, guidance, policies, and research on the design and application of generative AI for educational purposes.
  • Faculty Training and Support: Create resources and training materials to assist stakeholders in adopting and utilizing generative AI tools, including the university's AI Tutor and other initiatives. Conduct workshops and training sessions for faculty, instructional staff, and other stakeholders. Provide ongoing assistance to faculty and stakeholders in the development and deployment of generative AI-based academic technologies.
  • Research and Innovation: Stay informed about advancements in generative AI, education, instructional design, and related fields. Investigate and develop new AI applications and resources for academic use. Contribute to research on the effectiveness and impact of AI-driven instructional tools.
  • Assessment and Evaluation: Create a framework for assessing project and initiative outcomes. Analyze data, prepare reports for stakeholders, and provide recommendations for improvements.
  • People and Initiatives Lead: Supervise OAT student employees. Lead additional strategic academic technology initiatives as assigned.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in education, curriculum design, instructional design, instructional technology, computer science, or a related field. A minimum of 2 years of experience with AI tools in education, custom GPTs, GPT tutors, or instructional design. Proven understanding of Learning Management Systems (LMS) and experience integrating educational technology tools into academic environments. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Proven ability to learn from experience, respond to leadership, troubleshoot, solve problems, mitigate risks, and make timely decisions. Capability to work effectively in a dynamic environment with competing priorities. High tolerance for ambiguity and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in education, curriculum design, instructional design, instructional technology, computer science, or a related field. Experience implementing custom GPTs/GPT tutors in higher education. More extensive experience with AI tools and instructional design than required. Experience in a university academic setting.

Salary Range

$80,000 + depending on qualifications
