About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consumer Protection Attorney to join our team at CAPPS, Inc. as a Data Privacy and Security Specialist. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a dynamic state agency, the Office of the Attorney General, to protect Texas consumers and the legitimate business community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide legal advice and counsel to clients and management on factual and legal issues related to consumer protection and data privacy.
  • Participate in administrative and evidentiary hearings, and in the discovery process, to ensure compliance with state and federal laws.
  • Perform legal research and investigations to identify and address potential consumer protection issues.
  • Represent the Office of the Attorney General in civil matters before state or federal district and appellate courts.
  • Prepare and present cases for trial, including drafting legal documents and conducting witness interviews and depositions.
  • Collaborate with division attorneys and staff to develop and implement strategies to protect consumers and prevent deceptive business practices.
  • Stay up-to-date with changes in laws and regulations related to consumer protection and data privacy.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited law school with a J.D. degree.
  • Licensed as an attorney by the State of Texas and a member of good standing with the State Bar of Texas.
  • At least two years of full-time experience working in the fields of data privacy, consumer protection, or commercial litigation.
  • Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and communicate effectively.
  • Strong understanding of consumer protection laws and regulations, including the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with complex litigation and jury trial experience.
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations related to data privacy, including HIPAA, the HITECH Act, and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act.
  • Certifications in privacy-focused areas, such as the Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP-US) or the Certified Data Privacy Professional (CDPP).
