Patient Safety Coordinator

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Risk Management Specialist to join our team at Good Shepherd Health Care. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating the day-to-day organization-wide risk management activities and developing and maintaining systems to detect, monitor, prevent, and manage patient adverse events, malpractice claims, and other indicators of potential patient harm.
Key Responsibilities- Clinical Risk and Claims Management
- Coordinate the risk management program to meet the needs of the health care system and comply with state and federal laws and related accreditation standards.
- Participate in activities designed to reduce risk exposure and improve quality and safety of patient care, including Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Failure Modes Effects Analysis (FMEA), and quality improvement teams.
- Act as a resource person by presenting relevant risk management issues for discussion and evaluation.
- Determine the necessity of evidence retention and direct procedures for special handling.
- Closely collaborate with Patient Relations staff to resolve complex clinical grievances.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures that reduce the overall risk of the organization.
- Implement and sustain CANDOR (Communication and Optimal Resolution) to respond to unexpected events in a timely and thorough manner.
- Serve as the organization's content expert for Oregon's Apology Law and System-Wide Policy Unanticipated Outcome or Medical Accident Disclosure.
- Encourage and support early and transparent reporting of harm events, errors, mistakes, and near misses with no fear of retribution.
- Create a plan for back-up coverage or cross-training for out-of-office time.
- Assist in collaboration with internal stakeholders and insurance brokers, including completing applications.
- Initiate, coordinate, and manage all investigational and evaluation activities associated with professional liability occurrences.
- Data Management and Incident Reporting
- Monitor incident reporting system (RLDatix Risk and Feedback modules) for patient harm events and unanticipated outcomes, and investigate and summarize incidents.
- Assist in identifying organizational risk through trend analysis of incidents, reports, etc.
- Assist in preparing reports/dashboards and presenting risk management issues and/or data at various assigned committees.
- Education and Training
- Develop educational programs/activities to raise staff awareness to risk exposure and the impact on professional liability.
- Interface with staff physicians to ensure communication and cooperation in risk management efforts.
- Encourage and consistently reinforce staff compliance with organizational policies, safety regulations, accreditation requirements, and risk management activities.
- Present at new employee orientation regarding risk management.
We are seeking a candidate with a minimum of an Associate's Degree in a healthcare-related field and certification in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) or equivalent experience. The ideal candidate will have three to five years of experience as a clinician or equivalent work experience in a healthcare setting, as well as experience working with the public to resolve disputes or equivalent work experience. The candidate should have effective and professional oral and written communication skills, an understanding of healthcare regulations, and experience-based knowledge of customer service techniques.
