Job Overview: The Refrigeration/HVAC Mechanic role operates under the general oversight of the Physical Plant Supervisor, executing Journeyman Level tasks in the management, upkeep, and repair of extensive modern HVAC, refrigeration, and heating systems. This position may involve minor installation and construction duties as needed to ensure the functionality and safety of facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Installation, inspection, and repair of cooling, heating, and refrigeration systems within existing infrastructure.
  • Conducting preventative maintenance by examining, cleaning, adjusting, or replacing components such as filters, evaporative cooling pads, V-Belts, pumps, valves, electric motors, and circuit boards. Utilizing various meters to test HVAC equipment for worn or defective parts. Reading and interpreting schematics and manuals to follow appropriate standards or procedures for repairs or installations.
  • Ordering necessary materials and supplies for maintenance tasks.
  • Collaborating with other craftsmen on minor repair or construction projects that require teamwork for safe completion.
  • Operating and programming the Building Energy Management System to regulate comfort and air quality in individual spaces.
  • Completing necessary documentation prior to initiating work orders and after their completion.
  • Maintaining records for maintenance and inspections, along with the Refrigerant Management Program.
  • Participating in professional skills training and safety training.
  • Providing after-hours emergency response for facilities and overseeing repair work as needed on a rotating schedule.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

  • Knowledge of: Techniques and practices related to repair, maintenance, remodeling, and construction of HVAC systems. Familiarity with reading blueprints, sketches, and structural components of buildings. Understanding of national and local building codes, as well as safety practices.
  • Skills in: Utilizing methods and practices for remodeling and construction. Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints and schematics related to HVAC, electrical, and utility systems. Applying knowledge of ASHRAE and National Electrical Code Standards.
  • Ability to: Perform maintenance, repair, and minor construction on HVAC systems with minimal supervision. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and follow instructions accurately.

Preferred Qualifications: Candidates should possess a combination of experience, education, and training that aligns with the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined. An ideal candidate will have two years of Journeyman Level experience in operating, repairing, and maintaining large modern refrigeration and heating systems, supplemented by relevant training.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Successful candidates will undergo a criminal background investigation and must achieve a favorable Tier 1 investigation for obtaining a Common Access Card (CAC).
  • Must possess EPA 608 HVACR Universal certification at the time of application.

This position requires driving or vehicle use as an essential function of the job.
