Job Overview: The Refrigeration/HVAC Mechanic role operates under the guidance of the Physical Plant Supervisor, executing Journeyman Level tasks in the operation, maintenance, and repair of advanced HVAC, refrigeration, and heating systems. This position may involve minor installation and construction duties to ensure the functionality and safety of facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Installation, inspection, and repair of cooling, heating, and refrigeration systems within existing infrastructure.
  • Conducting preventative maintenance by inspecting, cleaning, adjusting, or replacing components such as filters, evaporative cooling pads, V-Belts, pumps, valves, electric motors, and circuit boards. Utilizing various meters to test HVAC equipment for worn or defective parts. Reading and interpreting schematics and manuals to guide repair or installation processes.
  • Ordering necessary materials and supplies for maintenance tasks.
  • Collaborating with other craftsmen on minor repair or construction projects requiring teamwork.
  • Operating and programming the Building Energy Management System to regulate comfort and air quality in designated areas.
  • Completing required documentation prior to and following work order completion.
  • Maintaining records for maintenance inspections and managing refrigerant programs.
  • Participating in professional skills and safety training.
  • Providing after-hours emergency response and overseeing repair work as needed on a rotating basis.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

  • Knowledge of: Repair and maintenance methods, remodeling practices, and construction techniques. Installation and replacement of major HVAC services. Reading blueprints and understanding building utility systems. Familiarity with national and local building codes, tools, equipment, and materials related to the trade.
  • Skills in: Applying remodeling and construction methods. Understanding blueprints and schematics related to HVAC, electrical, and utility systems. Knowledge of ASHRAE and National Electrical Code Standards, as well as safety practices. Proficiency in using tools and equipment relevant to HVAC technology.
  • Ability to: Perform maintenance, repair, and minor construction tasks independently. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and follow instructions accurately.

Preferred Qualifications: Candidates should possess a combination of experience, education, and training that aligns with the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined. An ideal candidate will have at least two years of Journeyman Level experience in the operation, repair, and maintenance of large refrigeration and heating systems, complemented by training in modern refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Candidates will undergo a criminal background investigation and must achieve a favorable Tier 1 investigation for obtaining a Common Access Card (CAC).
  • Must possess EPA 608 HVACR Universal certification at the time of application.
