Job Overview: The Refrigeration/HVAC Mechanic role operates under the general oversight of the Physical Plant Supervisor, executing Journeyman Level tasks in the management, upkeep, and repair of advanced HVAC, refrigeration, and heating systems. This position may involve minor installation and construction duties as necessary to ensure the functionality and safety of facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Installation, inspection, and repair of cooling, heating, and refrigeration systems within existing infrastructure.
- Conducting preventative maintenance by inspecting, cleaning, adjusting, or replacing components such as filters, evaporative cooling pads, V-Belts, pumps, valves, electric motors, and circuit boards. Testing HVAC systems with various meters to identify worn or defective parts. Reading and interpreting schematics and manuals to follow appropriate procedures for repairs or installations.
- Ordering necessary materials and supplies for maintenance tasks.
- Collaborating with other craftsmen on minor repair or construction projects requiring teamwork.
- Operating and programming the Building Energy Management System to regulate comfort and air quality in various spaces.
- Completing necessary documentation prior to and following work order completion.
- Maintaining maintenance and inspection records as well as the Refrigerant Management Program.
- Participating in professional skills training and safety training.
- Providing after-hours emergency response and overseeing repair work as needed on a rotating schedule.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
- Knowledge of: Methods and practices for repair, maintenance, remodeling, and construction. Installation and replacement of major HVAC systems. Reading blueprints and understanding structural components of buildings and utility systems. Familiarity with national and local building codes, tools, equipment, and materials relevant to the trade. Safety practices, estimating, and ordering supplies.
- Skills in: Utilizing methods and practices of remodeling and construction. Understanding blueprints and schematics related to HVAC, electrical, and utility systems. Applying ASHRAE and National Electrical Code Standards along with local building codes. Proficiency in using common and specialized tools and electrical testing equipment. Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to: Perform maintenance, repair, and minor construction tasks independently. Communicate clearly and follow both verbal and written instructions.
Preferred Qualifications: Candidates should possess a combination of experience, education, and training that meets the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities. The ideal candidate will have two years of Journeyman Level experience in the operation, repair, and maintenance of modern refrigeration and heating systems, supplemented by relevant training.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.
- Candidates will undergo a criminal background investigation and must achieve a favorable Tier 1 investigation for obtaining a Common Access Card (CAC).
- Must possess EPA 608 HVACR Universal certification at the time of application.
