The role involves a variety of responsibilities related to railroad equipment within designated operational areas. Key duties include:
- Receiving and executing instructions for train movements from supervisory personnel.
- Completing trip reports following the conclusion of all train operations.
- Overseeing and coordinating the activities of crew members involved in train movements and car spotting.
- Operating switching locomotives and other railroad machinery as directed.
- Positioning railroad cars accurately within confined spaces for efficient off-loading.
- Monitoring tracks for obstructions and ensuring safe operations.
- Conducting inspections of equipment such as couplings, air hoses, and journal boxes to guarantee functionality.
- Making minor repairs and adjustments to equipment using hand tools.
- Manipulating track switches to direct trains and cars to their designated locations.
- Setting warning signals during emergencies and ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
- Maintaining cleanliness and performing operator-level maintenance on assigned locomotives and equipment.
- Preparing reports for any accidents or incidents as required.
- Flexibility to work various hours, including nights, as necessary.
- Additional related duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications:
Preferred: Experience in handling hazardous materials.
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Proficient knowledge of assigned and other railroad equipment.
- Able to perform operational maintenance with minimal oversight.
- At least five (5) years of verifiable experience with a recognized rail line in roles such as engineer, brakeman, or conductor.
- Possession of a valid state driver's license.
- Required to wear appropriate safety footwear meeting ASTM F standards.
- Successful candidates will undergo a government security investigation and must maintain eligibility for access to all operational areas.
Physical Demands:
Typical daily activities include:
- Frequent walking and standing.
- Climbing to board locomotives.
- Frequent stooping and bending.
- Lifting up to 50 lbs.
Personal Protective Equipment will be mandatory.
