Position Overview

The role of the Child and Family Support Specialist involves delivering in-home support to children and their families through a skill-based, solution-oriented approach. This position aims to empower families to find constructive solutions to their challenges by teaching essential skills and behavioral strategies while connecting them with community resources and support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide intervention services for in-home family support.
  • Establish and nurture effective relationships with families and community service providers, including healthcare professionals, legal representatives, therapists, law enforcement, educational staff, and local organizations.
  • Conduct screenings and assessments to determine eligibility for programs and identify areas for improvement in service plans.
  • Offer training and support to families in developing and applying functional skills.
  • Evaluate issues and deliver care to youth and families, tracking progress towards established goals and regularly updating service plans.
  • Engage in outreach and prevention initiatives to enhance community awareness and provide educational programs for families.
  • Maintain a required level of direct contact with families and be available for crisis intervention as necessary.
  • Provide training to educators and others involved with children on managing challenging behaviors.
  • Support family self-determination by helping them identify and access community services.
  • Educate families on the importance of physical health, quality medical care, and preventive health practices.
  • Assist families in leveraging their spiritual and religious beliefs as a source of strength.
  • Exemplify professionalism through role modeling and mutual respect.
  • Meet with families and children at various locations, utilizing personal transportation for work-related travel.

Administrative Duties

  • Prepare and submit reports regarding case load status, budget requests, and service plan modifications.
  • Report critical incidents involving families or staff in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Complete necessary documentation and service plans promptly as per program requirements.
  • Implement feedback from supervisors to enhance service delivery.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant contractual, regulatory, and accreditation standards.
  • Notify supervisors of any changes in professional status that may impact job performance or program compliance.
  • May receive training to become a certified instructor for parenting courses.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Comprehensive understanding of public assistance and social service systems.
  • Familiarity with interventions such as risk assessment and crisis management.
  • Ability to work independently with integrity and flexibility.
  • Knowledge of local community resources and service providers.
  • Effective communication skills across all organizational levels while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Understanding of the Boys Town model and fidelity of care principles.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Services or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working with children and families.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to provide personal transportation for job-related travel.
  • Availability for crisis response and non-traditional working hours.
  • Bilingual skills may be required based on business needs.

  • Experience in community-based programs or Boys Town initiatives.
