Position Overview:

Penn State Health Cancer Institute is excited to announce a unique opportunity for a Nurse Practitioner to join the Division of Blood and Vascular Disorders, specifically supporting the Sickle Cell Program. This role involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including Physicians, Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), nursing staff, and dosimetry, in both inpatient and outpatient environments, while also contributing to quality improvement initiatives.

Outpatient Duties:

  • Collaborate with the lead physician to prepare for clinic sessions by reviewing patient records from referring providers for new and returning patients.
  • Clinic Engagement: Conduct patient visits, including obtaining medical histories, placing orders, and documenting during consultations.
  • Educational Role: Work alongside the lead provider to educate patients on treatment rationales, including the management of red cell transfusions, iron overload, chronic pain, early renal dysfunction, and VTE prophylaxis/treatment.
  • Serve as the primary contact for the nurse coordinator regarding daily patient concerns.
  • Infusion Room Responsibilities: Assess patients experiencing acute pain crises in the infusion room and document evaluations.
  • Pain Management: Oversee narcotic prescriptions, monitor refill requirements, and manage urine drug screenings, while developing a proactive refill calendar.

Inpatient Responsibilities:

  • Assess hospitalized patients for acute sickle cell crises within 24-48 hours of admission and provide consultations as necessary.

Quality Improvement Initiatives:

  • Collaborate with the lead physician on quality improvement projects for the Sickle Cell Clinic and manage data collection for state grant reporting.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing with clinical specialization required.
  • Minimum of two years of experience as a Registered Nurse required.
  • Current licensure as a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP) by the Pennsylvania Board of Nurse Examiners required.
  • Demonstrated effective consultation skills are essential.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the relevant specialty area is preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
