Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Paralegal / Legal Assistant II to support the Financial Litigation Unit (FLU) of the United States Attorney's Office (USAO). The successful candidate will assist attorneys in reviewing case material, gathering and analyzing evidence, and preparing legal documents. This is a unique opportunity to join a team dedicated to removing the tools of crime from criminal organizations and impacting the infrastructure of criminal enterprises.

Responsibilities
  • Assist attorneys in reviewing case material, including gathering and analyzing evidence, and preparing legal documents.
  • Receive, examine, and evaluate FLU cases for completeness, including missing documents and conflicting statements.
  • Investigate defendants' financial history through subpoenas, interrogatories, financial statements, credit reports, legal databases, and internet searches.
  • Participate in debtor exams, interviews debtors and employers, and determines appropriate actions for collection.
  • Negotiate consent judgments with debtors, establish financial repayment plans, and negotiate compromises between Federal agencies and debtors or their attorneys.
  • Offset and seize assets in accordance with the Federal Debt Collection Procedures Act.
  • Coordinate with U.S. District Court personnel, U.S. Marshals Service, and Probation Department to facilitate debtor compliance.
  • Receive and process payments, post in accounting database, and reconcile case balances.
  • Prepare and organize trial exhibits, including statistical charts and photographic exhibits.
  • Draft, edit, and review non-legal information, create correspondence, and research reports.
  • Help prepare for trial by organizing exhibits and assisting in creating and organizing statistical charts and photographs.
  • Interview potential witnesses and prepare summary interview reports.
  • Review prepared legal documents to confirm citations and legal references.
  • Attend pre-trial meetings to review case materials for missing documents or other questionable material and may request further information to correct deficiencies.
  • After/during trial, prepare summaries of testimony and depositions.
  • Investigate facts and laws of cases and search public records to prepare cases and determine causes of action, as well as research reports and correspondence relating to cases.
Requirements
  • Paralegal Certificate or High School Diploma/GED with at least two years' Paralegal / Legal Assistant experience.
  • Collections or bankruptcy experience a plus.
  • Trial and automated litigation support experience preferred.
  • Ability to grasp and understand the organization and functions of the customer.
  • Knowledge to conduct basic legal research, including standard legal citation.
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written, to include legal writing skills.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Experience with the Microsoft Office suite of applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and other common software applications, to include databases and legal research tools.
  • Proven commitment and expertise to provide excellent customer service; positive and flexible.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, deliver the highest quality of work, and maintain a professional disposition under extreme pressure.
