Prairie State Legal Services, Inc. is in search of a Staff Attorney to enhance our operations in the Bloomington office. Staff Attorneys at PSLS deliver a comprehensive array of legal assistance to some of the most at-risk members of our communities, including economically disadvantaged individuals, senior citizens, veterans, and persons with disabilities. Our focus is on legal challenges that affect our clients' ability to fulfill their essential human needs, such as safety, healthcare access, adequate housing, and financial security. As the primary legal aid provider in most of our service areas, we take pride in offering high-quality legal support while fostering a collaborative and rewarding work environment that promotes professional development.

Key Responsibilities
As part of your role, the Staff Attorney will:

  • Deliver legal assistance to low-income individuals across various legal matters, including housing, family law, public benefits, consumer rights, health law, education, and more.
  • Conduct interviews with applicants seeking legal services and evaluate their legal challenges, prioritizing those that have an immediate effect on their essential human needs.
  • Provide comprehensive legal services, which encompass legal research, factual investigation, legal counsel, brief services, document preparation, dispute resolution, and representation in administrative and judicial settings.
  • Establish and maintain networking relationships with local bar associations, governmental entities, and community organizations that serve our client demographics.
  • Organize outreach initiatives within client communities, including educational events and intake sessions at partner locations.
  • Ensure accurate and thorough documentation for grant reporting purposes, including maintaining detailed case records.
  • Actively engage in internal task forces related to specific areas of our practice.
  • Demonstrate a high level of personal energy, organization, and dedication to the role and the mission of PSLS.

Compensation and Benefits
The Staff Attorney position is a full-time role, requiring 37.5 hours per week. PSLS offers a competitive salary in line with similar organizations. The starting salary for newly licensed attorneys is $70,000 per year, with increases based on relevant experience. Qualifications

  • Preferred candidates are those currently licensed to practice law in Illinois or those licensed in another state who are eligible for reciprocity in Illinois. Law graduates preparing for the next bar exam will also be considered.
  • Experience in trial advocacy and negotiation is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, along with research capabilities and computer proficiency.
  • Organizational skills and case management experience are required.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Spanish language proficiency is a plus but not mandatory.
  • Some travel may be necessary; candidates must possess a valid driver's license and/or reliable transportation.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience serving low-income populations.
